Heritage Alteration Permit Application and McBride-Columbia intersection modifications

As part of the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project, the McBride Boulevard and East Columbia Street intersection requires modification to improve safety for walkers, cyclists and drivers, and to accommodate the new direct East Columbia off-ramp from the new bridge. These changes require the alteration of a portion of the Woodlands heritage wall.

The City of New Westminster has issued a Heritage Alteration Permit for the Woodlands heritage wall. A presentation summarizing the proposal is available here. An online comment form was available from August 12 to 27, 2021.

Fraser Crossing Partners, the contractor building the new bridge, has removed approximately 85 metres of the wall at the corner of McBride Boulevard and East Columbia Street. The removal of the section of wall is required to improve sightlines for westbound traffic and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. The wall is being rebuilt further to the north of East Columbia, and the wrought iron salvaged and reinstalled on the new wall. In the meantime, the wrought iron will be stored carefully for future use. For more information, please click here.
