2020 Fall Presentation Series: Air Tightness and Ventilation

Build-tight, ventilate right has been a well-researched and proven standard to live by in building science and design for decades. The Washington codes have now followed suit in requiring this best practice for multi-family housing and other building types. SeaBEC is excited to announce our fall line-up of speakers including local and nationally recognized experts on the topics of air tightness & proper ventilation. Part 2 - Low-rise multi-family residential “build tight, ventilate right” challenges for WA State and ASHRAE 62.2

Mike Lubliner will provide an overview of the new (2018) WA State residential energy code (WSEC-R) and WA state ventilation related amendments to the international mechanical (IMC) Code.   Code will be effective February 1, 2021 at which time WA State will require balanced ventilation systems and documented commissioning.   The code focuses on three story or less multi-family units, typically garden style “woody walkups” and interior corridor type dwelling units.  Mike will discuss the value proposition of overcoming typical design, installation, commissioning and O&M challenges to “build tight and ventilate right.”  

 Dr. Iain Walker will share the current ASHRAE 62.2 related multi-family discussions and issues.  Iain and Mike will share “common theme” findings from recent DOE and CEC funded field research on IAQ and mechanical ventilation system performance, and research on how Smart Ventilation Controls (SVC) may improve future system performance.

Michael Lubliner, WSU Energy Program

Michael Lubliner has worked in the energy conservation and renewable energy field for over 35 years, starting his career as the Pacific Northwest regional distributor for Grumman, Bio-Energy Systems and other renewable energy products. In 1983, Lubliner began working for the Washington State Energy Office, where he helped develop, implement, evaluate, and refine the Northwest Power Planning Council’s Model Conservation Standards, state energy codes, and Super Good Cents site-built and manufactured housing programs. He works in support of the U.S. DOE Building America Program and the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR Program. Mr. Lubliner has a B.S. in energy engineering from The Evergreen State College

Dr. Iain Walker, LBNL

Dr. Iain Walker is a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has more than 30 years of experience as a building scientist, conducting research on energy retrofits, zero energy homes and IAQ/ventilation. He is the current chair of the US national residential ventilation standard (ASHRAE 62.2) and serves on standards and technical committees for ASHRAE, ASTM and other national and international standards and professional organizations. He is an ASHRAE Fellow, leads the US DOE national efforts on IAQ in homes and international efforts with the IEA's Air Infiltration and Ventilation Center.
