Sydenham Public School presents “Ready to Read”:
A Workshop for Families of Early and Struggling Readers
(suited for families of children in Kindergarten to Grade 3)
Date: Wednesday, June 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Location: In person - Sydenham Public School Library
In this workshop, Emma and Emily, two M.Ed students at Queen’s Faculty of Education, will share high-yield reading and writing strategies that can be easily implemented at home to help develop your child’s early reading skills! Trained in the Science of Reading, Emma and Emily will help you unlock your child’s reading potential by explaining, demonstrating, and providing you with strategies that will enhance your child’s oral language skills, early reading and writing skills. You will leave this 90 minute workshop with a better understanding of the reading process and how even 5 minutes a day can help improve your child’s confidence to read. Additionally, all workshop participants will receive a “Literacy Briefcase” containing all of the essential resources and materials you need to start working with your child today. Even 5 minutes a day can have a lasting impact on your child’s reading development and ensure your child is on the pathway to becoming a proficient, lifelong reader.
Participating parents/caregivers will leave with the following resource toolkit:
· briefcase
· white board and dry erase marker
· customized book mark of early reading strategies
· decodable books
· code packs
· Sounds Skills Choice Board
This workshop is funded by an LDSB PRO grant which is an outreach program designed to encourage parents and caregivers to be involved in their child’s learning.
Hard copies of the flyer for this workshop went home with students on April 28th or May 2nd. Please register for this workshop by returning the cut off portion on the hard copy flyer, or by contacting your child's educator by May 13th, 2022. We hope to see you there for this very informative and practical workshop!

Masking Reminder
Although masks are no longer required for students, staff, and visitors in schools and on school transportation, masking continues to be strongly encouraged. It should be noted that when schools have crossed the threshold of 30% absences due to COVID-related reasons, KFL&A Public Health has issued a letter indicating that masking is recommended due to the presence of COVID in the school and community. Masks continue to be available daily for all students, as well as PPE for all staff.
Many students and staff are choosing to continue to wear masks at times, or consistently, and we support every student’s (and family’s) decision around masking.
Please remember to continue to screen your student(s) everyday before coming to school. (Use button below for link to daily Covid screener.)
When masking is required (as of March 21, 2022):
- Under federal travel requirements, upon return from international travel, individuals must always wear a mask when in public spaces (including schools and childcare) for 14 days.
- Individuals who are age 11 or younger or fully vaccinated, who tested positive or had symptoms of COVID-19, can return to school or work after their 5 days of isolation if symptoms are improving. They must, however, wear a well-fitted mask in all public settings (including schools and childcare) and avoid activities where they would need to take off their mask (for example, playing a wind instrument or removing their mask for sports) until 10 days after their symptoms started or from their positive test date.
- Individuals who are a close contact of a case of COVID-19 or a symptomatic individual who are not required to isolate, must wear a well-fitted mask in all public settings (including schools and childcare) for 10 days from their last exposure to the person with COVID-19 symptoms or positive test result (or from when the symptomatic or positive person finishes their isolation).
- Please note that exposures within the school setting are no longer included in the definition of a close contact. COVID reporting information can be found by clicking the button "COVID Dashboard for LDSB" below.
