Supporting your Child's Learning through Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting

Posted On Monday October 25, 2021

The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. Growing Success, Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools, acknowledges that assessment for, as and of learning is key to student engagement and success.

Assessment of learning or evaluation occurs at particular points in the school year or learning cycle. While communication about student learning and progress should occur on an ongoing basis using a variety of methods (ex. phone calls, newsletters, websites, student work etc.) in accordance with the Growing Success policy, formal communication to parents will happen at three times during the school year. All students from Grades 1-8 will receive a fall progress report card and two provincial report cards, one in mid-winter and one at the end of the school year.

The Progress Report Card

• places a strong emphasis on the development of students' learning skills and work habits that we know are essential for success. Students' achievement of six learning skills and work habits will be shown on the front page of the progress report card. These are:

  1. Responsibility,
  2. Organization,
  3. Independent Work,
  4. Collaboration,
  5. Initiative, and
  6. Self-Regulation.

The development of these skills and habits will be reported as "excellent", "good", "satisfactory" or "needs improvement". A space is also provided for teacher comments about students' strengths, areas for improvement and next steps;

• encourages early and ongoing communication between you and your child's teacher;

• allows time to conference with your child’s teacher to discuss next steps for improvement;

• continues to report on all subjects, but instead of assigning a grade or mark, it tells you how well your child is progressing: “very well”, “well” or “with difficulty”;

• in the event that a student has not yet received instruction in a subject/strand, the teacher will check the “not applicable” box;

• highlights strengths and areas to improve before evaluations are completed; and includes comments from your child's teacher that are personalized, clear and meaningful;

• will be sent home on November 8, 2021.

Provincial Report Cards

This year, the first Provincial Report Card will be sent home on February 7, 2022 and the final Report Card will be sent home on June 27, 2022 Your child’s teacher will be sending home information on conference scheduling.
