Mobilizing youth across Canada in support of a basic income guarantee

We are a group of engaged young people in Canada who are passionate about basic income.

The Basic Income Canada Youth Network was founded in 2020 to bring a youth voice to Canada's basic income movement. Through education, community-building, and activism, we mobilize young people in pursuit of a more just society.

Write to your MPs today in support of Bill C-233 to tell them: It’s time for a guaranteed livable basic income!

BICYN Presents: Pages, Pals, and Progress!

We are so excited to be starting something new – a BOOK CLUB! Pages, Pals, and Progress is an informal space to meet like-minded folks who want to learn more about the complexities of poverty and anti-poverty action, and share in dialogue together. We plan to meet once-a-month virtually, alternating between books and audio/visual media.

Pages Pals and Progress will be hosted by BICYN directors Shanaya Fischer and Ellen Spannagel.

New briefs on basic income, criminal justice, and child welfare

Part of the Case for Basic Income series, BICYN has two new publications we’re excited to share exploring the relationship between basic income and the criminal justice/child welfare systems in Canada.

Hill Times C-22 op-ed

In June 2023, BICYN Directors Ellen Spannagel and Alexandra Zannis published an op-ed in The Hill Times called: "Canada's disability benefit is a step forward, but we still need a guaranteed basic income." It celebrates Bill C-22 as a step forward in the long-fought battle by disability advocates to address poverty - and also identifies what C-22 leaves to be desired. You can read the op-ed here.

PS: The op-ed is behind The Hill Times' paywall - if you want to read the article but aren't a subscriber/don't have access, please email us and we will get you a copy!
