CLIMATE ACTION AFRICA

Based on needs identified at the local level, the Expert Deployment Mechanism Climate Action Africa Project deploys Canadian climate change experts to partner with governments, NGOs, the private sector, civil society organizations and post-secondary institutions on targeted, short-term technical assistance in support of implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement across the region – with a focus on increasing women’s capabilities to fully participate as active agents of change.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for approximately 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions as of 2021, but faces significant threats from climate change. Crop failure, livestock morbidity and biodiversity loss are among impacts experienced across the region.

Many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are taking action by increasing the use of renewable energy, conserving and restoring forests, and building climate-resilient green economies.

Climate Action in Africa strengthens the capacity of NDAs, decision-makers and stakeholders responsible for coordinating and planning climate action at all levels, which is crucial for increased ambition and application of the Paris Rulebook.

Mitigation & Adaptation

Climate Action in Africa supports the strengthening of Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans, with a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through renewable energy and REDD+, and enhance resilience, with a focus on water resources and agriculture. Empowering Women as Agents of Change

Facilitating South-South Cooperation
