What is Art Education in the 21st century?

"What excites me is the growing potentials of art education outside of the school system.  Community-based art education has moved from the peripheral to a central area of research in art education. The post modern definition of what art is and what art can be has redefined art education and is influencing what art education is becoming."

What do you consider to be your particular strengths and research interests as an Artist/Educator?

"My strengths are in my continued involvement and commitment to designing and implementing art programming in community.  While working with the Department of Art Education in the development of the Community Art Education undergraduate program I have come to realize the far reaching effects that art has on the individual, the community and society as a whole. I am strong believer of practice what you preach and my art practice (ceramic/mixed media sculpture) is informed by my teaching practice in that I am constantly exploring new methods of meaning making."

Janette Haggar began her art teaching profession in community settings.  She now shares her passion for art with students from preschool to university.  Believing in 'practicing what you preach', Haggar facilitates in community art partnerships and continues her studio practice.  Her research interests focus on community art education.
