The University of Kentucky is a public research institution based in Lexington, Ky. Established in 1865, it is considered the largest public university in the state. UK offers more than 200 academic programs across 16 colleges, with popular fields of study in business, nursing, and psychology. The university attracts a diverse talent pool, with students hailing from all 50 states and over 100 countries. Incoming freshmen are considered for a number of merit scholarships, including the competitive Otis A. Singletary
scholarship for honors college recipients which covers full tuition and supplies a housing stipend. A thriving research community, in 2023 UK was awarded nearly $480 million in research funding from grant and contract awards. Outside of the classroom, UK hosts more than 450 student organizations and clubs to spark student involvement. The Kentucky Wildcats sponsors 22 varsity sports programs, where nearly 500 student-athletes compete. The “Big Blue Nation”—considered one of the most loyal fan bases in the country—cheers on the Wildcats in official blue and white colors, particularly during basketball games. Several NBA stars got their start at UK, including Anthony Davis, John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins.
