Transfer Credit External

If you have completed post-secondary credits prior to coming to SLC, you may apply to transfer those credits to your program at SLC, if they are considered equivalent. You'll find everything you need to know on this page.

TRANSFER CREDIT internal

Students who transfer from one SLC program to another will automatically be given credit in all identical courses common to both programs. For non-identical courses, you may apply to transfer previous SLC credits to your current SLC program, if they are considered equivalent.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

PLAR is separate from transfer credit and exemption. PLAR recognizes learning acquired outside the classroom through employment, volunteer activities, self-directed study, travel, or other life experiences. Visit the PLAR web page to learn more and apply.

Communications and General Education Courses

Graduates with a completed three- or four-year undergraduate degree from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution are eligible to receive transfer credit toward introductory communications and general education courses (completed within the past 10 years and 60% or C- average minimum required). International undergraduate degrees may be eligible depending on International Credential Evaluation (ICAS, WES or equivalent) and language of instruction. To be considered for review, please submit an Undergraduate Degree Transfer Credit Application here.

Transfer Credits

SLC will award transfer credits to students for courses completed at other accredited colleges and universities if the learning outcomes are equivalent and current to the courses within their program of study.

Please review the Academic Policy section 3.11 Transfer of Credit (External) and section 3.12 Transfer of Credit (Internal) for policy information regarding the transfer credit process.

Note: Bachelor of Business Administration students follow the Laurentian University Transfer Credit Policy and do not need to complete the form.

Transfer credit requests can be submitted two weeks prior to the semester start date and no later than the 10th day of classes.

How to Apply for Transfer Credit

  • Before submitting your Application for Transfer Credit, please read through all the information. Requests will not be accepted if the form is completed incorrectly.
  • Please be aware: Courses approved as equivalent and dropped from your timetable may impact your status as a full-time student, which may impact fee calculation and eligibility for OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, and student health plans.
  • Transfer credits are normally accepted from accredited colleges and universities. All other institutions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Transfer credits will not be awarded for courses taken at career/private colleges (however, they may qualify for an exemption).
  • Transfer credits from high school courses may only qualify if they are dual-credit courses.
  • Courses being transferred must be completed in the last five years to qualify unless specified by the program coordinator.
  • Once transfer credit has been accepted for one course, it cannot be used again towards another course in the same program.
  • Partial transfer credits will not be granted.
  • Denied transfer credits are not subject to appeals; however, students will be provided with the reason why their request was denied.

Transfer credit requests can be submitted two weeks prior to the semester start date and no later than the 10th day of classes.

  • If you apply by the deadline and the credit is approved, the course being replaced will be removed from your transcript.
  • If you apply after the deadline but before the academic penalty deadline, then a “W” grade will be applicable for the course being replaced.
  • If you apply after the academic penalty deadline, then an “F” grade would be applicable.
  • The transfer credit can still be used to satisfy graduation requirements.

When transferring courses toward general education elective courses (courses beginning in GENE), the course needs to meet the general education course criteria, outlined below (i.e., the transferred course does not need to be 80% equivalent to the St. Lawrence College course).

The transferred course needs to be 42-45 hours in length and meet the following criteria:

  • Less than 30% applied learning outcomes
  • Non-vocational to your program of study
  • Fits into one of the general education themes:
    • Arts in society
    • Civic life
    • Social and cultural understanding
    • Personal understanding
    • Science and technology

This is in addition to the other eligibility requirements listed for transfer credits. Please follow the instructions listed under "How to Apply for Transfer Credits" to apply. Please also note, when listing the St. Lawrence College course on the application form, it is acceptable to list "GENE."

Students with international credentials must have their credentials assessed by the International Credentials Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS).

Are you applying only to St. Lawrence College?

You can complete a Transcript Assessment Request Form:

A CAD$120 fee is charged for this assessment. Please note that you will NOT receive a copy of this assessment; the results are only for St. Lawrence College to consider your application for transfer credit.

Do you need your assessment to be shared?

If you need your assessment to be shared, you can apply directly through ICAS at icascanada.ca. Please note that St. Lawrence College requires at least the Post-secondary Comprehensive Assessment Report from ICAS, and the fee for this assessment (direct from ICAS to you) is CAD$200.

Exemptions

An exemption is a broader academic assessment than a transfer of credit. It may be awarded to a student in recognition that the course requirement is waived through academic assessment and testing or assessment on prior academic achievements.

How to Apply for Exemptions

And other important information you need to know before you apply.

  • Prior education from high schools, private/career colleges, and other colleges and universities (that do not qualify as transfer credits) may qualify for exemptions.
  • Before submitting your Application for Exemption, please read through all the information. Requests won't be accepted if the form is completed incorrectly, or the form has not been dated and the certified electronic signature box is not checked.
  • Please be aware: Courses approved as exemptions mean they will be dropped from your timetable and may impact your status as a full-time student. This may impact fee calculation and eligibility for OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, and student health plans.

The deadline for submission is the 10th day of classes after the semester start.

You must remain in class until your exemption examination/assignment has been completed and graded as a pass.

1. Read through the important information about exemptions.

2. Download the Application for Transfer Credit/Exemption Form and complete sections A and C.

  • You'll outline the course(s) you wish to seek exemption for and the prior academic achievements you received that you believe qualifies you for exemption.

3. Pay the applicable fee.

  • A $25 exemption processing fee is charged, in addition to any fees associated with the exemption exam or assignment (e.g., if the exam proctoring fee is $100, this fee must be paid in addition to the $25 processing fee).

4. Send your completed application by the deadline to the Pathways Coordinator by email at pathways@sl.on.ca or by mail to:

St. Lawrence College
Attn: Pathways Coordinator
100 Portsmouth Ave
Kingston, ON K7L 5A6

5. Check your SLC student email.

  • SLC will email you at your student email with instructions about any exemption requirements.
  • You must stay in your course until your exemption examination/assignment has been completed and graded as a pass.
  • Exemptions awarded for courses required for a program contribute to graduation requirements and appear on the academic record as “EX.” Exemptions awarded to a student do not contribute to the GPA.
