Podium performance highlights final day of World Athletics U20 Championships

A week of great performances at the World Athletics U20 Championships came to an end in bronze-medal style Sunday in Nairobi.

Savannah Sutherland won bronze in the women’s 400-metre hurdles, in a personal best time of 57.27 seconds. “My legs felt a little heavy going into it, but I went out there and left it all on the track and that’s all I can ask for. I had a personal best, so I’m happy with that,” said Sutherland. “It has been a little overwhelming being at my first international competition. It has been a little bit of a crazy experience, but it has been very positive overall.

Abdullahi Hassan got out fast in the men’s 800-metre final, but he would settle for seventh place, stopping the clock at 1:50.07. “I did what I had to do to try to get a medal with the Kenyans. It didn’t work out and I blew up a little bit, but it is what it is,” said Hassan. “I love this place. The venue is amazing. Everyone here has been so hospitable and nice. It has just been great.”

In the final event of the Championships for Team Canada, Dylan Uhrich took 12th place in the men’s 3,000-metre steeplechase in a time of 9:11.33. “I’m so happy with it. I didn’t have a specific place goal. I just wanted to go out there and fight as hard as I could in a World Championship final and have no regrets and that’s what I did,” said Uhrich. “I finished 12th and I’m super happy about that. I’m super happy with my time. At 6,000 feet, I didn’t expect to run that fast up here.”

World Championships week at a glance

The Canadian squad leaves Nairobi having won two bronze medals, establishing five new personal bests and competing in nine event finals.

“Overall, I’m very proud of how Team Canada performed. The logistics, competition itself and COVID protocols were something we knew were going to be quite difficult,” said head coach Jason Reindl. “The overall number of two medals, plus personal bests, finalists and overall achievements of the team were quite strong, so we’re extremely happy to build off this and see what we can do into 2022 and beyond.”

Pole vault podium performance

Heather Abadie’s podium performance got the week started. She earned bronze in the women’s pole vault with a best jump of 4.05 metres.

Simply the best

Ella Clayton (54.10 seconds) and Michael Roth (46.51 seconds) both established personal best times on Day 1 of competition, setting new benchmarks in the process of earning their spots in their respective 400-metre finals.

Roth would lower his time again in the 400-metre final (46.10 seconds) and also set a new personal best in the 200 metres this week, at 21.14 seconds.

Avery Pearson set her new personal best in the women’s 800-metre final, stopping the clock at 2:06.42.

Sutherland clocked Canada’s last personal best of the week in her medal-winning performance in the women’s 400-metre hurdles.
