Earlier this week, I joined representatives from our union and your employer for a presentation on the results of Dr. Rich Brown's recruitment and retention study that the Ministry of the Attorney General began in April 2022.
After extensive surveying, focus groups and additional study, the results of the study confirm what sheriff members have been saying for years: the number one way to recruit and retain sheriffs in B.C. is to increase their pay. Sheriffs must be paid a fair wage for their work.
The study also highlighted the need to address a number of other factors including: creating a more respectful work environment, the development of a clearer and streamlined hiring/training process, and devising processes that are more suited to the reality of your work.
Our union is supportive of the findings from the study as there is further evidence supporting what BCGEU members in the BC Sheriff Service have been saying for years about the need to address recruitment and retention.
The $10,000 Recruitment and Retention Incentive Payment – which our union advocated and pushed for at many levels over the past few years and government announced earlier this month – is a step in the right direction toward ensuring sheriffs are paid fairly. Our union will continue to fight for other, permanent initiatives that will bring sheriffs’ pay in line with their duties and work expectations.
Over the coming months, your union executive and I will continue to work with your employer to ensure that the results of this important study are thoroughly implemented.
We will continue to keep you up-to-date on the results of this important work.
In solidarity
