Letter from CAEFS and CCLA to PM Trudeau and Minister Lametti regarding bail reform
1/30/2023Earlier this month, Canada’s Premiers sent a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau calling for bail reform. While we agree that the bail system merits further attention, and have decades of collective experience studying the operation of Canada’s bail system, we do not agree with the perspective raised by the Premiers.
Alongside the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, CAEFS has sent a letter to PM Trudeau and Minister of Justice, Minister David Lametti, highlighting the ways in which the direction for reform proposed by the Premiers contradicts the findings of an extensive body of research documenting the operation of judicial interim release in Canada.
