A $10-million donation to YW Calgary will empower women and children fleeing domestic violence to take a step toward affordable housing, the women’s non-profit said.

The record-breaking donation from the Taylor family, well-known local philanthropists, is the biggest private gift the YW has received in its 112-year history.

“We are immensely grateful to the Taylor family for their landmark donation to YW. Their unwavering belief in supporting women and children is an inspiration to us all, and we are honoured to have their name associated with our first dedicated affordable housing building,” said Sue Tomney, CEO of YW Calgary.

“YW Taylor Family Home represents so much more than a new building. It’s a symbol of hope and a tangible expression of our community’s commitment to ending homelessness and domestic violence.”

The facility, which opened earlier this year, has two- and three-bedroom apartments, including four with added accessibility features. Tenants have access to parking, a bike room and storage spaces.

There’s a safe, central courtyard with an accessible playground.

Those living at the YW Taylor Family Home are connected to the wide range of YW programs, supports and services that are meant to help them as they rebuild their lives after escaping domestic abuse.

Since its opening, 18 women and 61 children have moved into the 21-unit building.

The new name was unveiled Wednesday morning during a ceremony outside the facility.

Ruth Taylor said her family is honoured and proud to help the YW make the facility into a home.

“It is with energy and dedication we embark on this exciting path together for women and their families,” said Taylor.
