Big changes are coming to the Maserati brand as the Italian automaker prepares a slew of new model launches. One of these will be a replacement for the recently deceased Maserati Gran Turismo but before that is revealed, the company has a different sports car to show off. Maserati has announced that the name of its new car will be the MC20, which stands for Maserati Corse 2020.

The company posted a short teaser for the car on social media and based on the inclusion of what appears to be a vertical-opening door, the MC20 should be a production version of the mid-engined prototype that was shown a few months ago.

Maserati has only revealed the name and for now, all other details will be kept secret until the car is revealed in Modena by the end of May. Maserati says the MC20 will be the first model of a "new era," and it will be built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, Italy. Unlike many of the company's upcoming vehicles, it doesn't appear as though the MC20 will be powered by electric motors. It could feature some form of hybridization but it looks like there will be an engine sitting mid-ship.

The Maserati Trident logo was first used on the Tipo 26, where the 26 signified the year of manufacture. This new MC20 uses the number 20 in the same way, signifying its year of genesis and the start of a new era for the company. The MC20 also marks a return to racing for the Maserati brand after a decade-long absence, although no particular racing series has yet been mentioned by name. The last Maserati race car was the Enzo-based, similarly named MC12, which raced from 2004 to 2010.

Progress is already being made to the Modena Plant to produce the MC20, which will likely go on sale sometime in late 2020 or early 2021 following its reveal later this year.
