In this session you will hear from two sustainability leaders, as they share their processes, insights, and challenges in guiding and operationalizing the sustainability agenda at the program level and beyond.
David Smith is the NSQIP surgeon champion at North York General Hospital. He has an interest in exploring how frontline teams can join and lead efforts to improve surgical quality. Currently he is exploring how frontline teams can use clinical trial platforms to synthesize new surgical knowledge and also how these same frontline teams can advance the planetary health agenda.
Caroline Stigant is a mother, gardener, educator, and climate activist via the development and practice of environmentally sustainable kidney care. She completed her nephrology training at the University of Toronto then obtained a Master of Health Science degree in epidemiologic research in CKD as recipient of a Kidney Foundation of Canada biomedical fellowship. She conceived and delivers the undergraduate UBC medicine lecture ‘The climate crisis, planetary health, and medical practice – a call to action’. She is Medical Lead of Planetary Health at BC Renal, co-chair of the Climate Change and Planetary Health Steering Committee at Island Health, a co-investigator with UBC Planetary Healthcare Lab to study the environmental impact of kidney therapies, and inaugural chair of the Sustainable Nephrology Action Planning ‘SNAP’ Committee of the Canadian Society of Nephrology. Dr. Stigant is proud to represent the CSN in the ‘GREEN-K’ (Global Environmental Evolution in Nephrology and Kidney Care) initiative of the ISN. An enduring vision is the alignment of medical practice with planetary health principles.
