Sarah Onyango

 "Legacies worth preserving, celebrating and creating" is the  theme chosen by Black History Ottawa for 2023.  My presentation, therefore, will honour the contributions of Black Canadian women who helped make Canada a more inclusive and just society as well as those who are continuing this work.

Sadly, these contributions are too often overlooked by the mainstream, thus perpetuating the mistaken belief that Black women have not been active changemakers throughout the history of this country. From Chloe Cooley to Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, I will highlight some remarkable Black women whose efforts have made a difference.

I will create a special slide presentation for my talk, and I am   really looking forward to meeting you all. Thank you for inviting me. 

About Sarah Onyango

A translator by trade, Sarah Onyango is a longtime community advocate who has tirelessly promoted African and Caribbean culture, organizations, causes, and events in Ottawa-Gatineau's Black community for over two decades.

A well-known fixture on Ottawa’s community television and radio scene, Sarah has hosted the monthly African cultural program Fontonfrom, on Rogers TV Cable 22 – Ottawa since 2002 as well as the weekly radio programs, Black on Black and Afrika Revisited on CHUO 89.1FM (University of Ottawa community radio) since the late 1990s.

To make it easier for the Black community to stay connected, Sarah created a website called BlackOttawa411. In addition to volunteering as a radio and TV host and producer, Sarah has emceed and helped organize numerous community events. She is also a board member of Black History Ottawa, where she is responsible for public relations and outreach activities.

Since 2008, Sarah has also been a member of the United Way East Ontario's Community Builder Award Recognition team. She is a 2018 Honouree of the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women program.
