What are the eligibility criteria?

Please note the eligibility criteria applies only to obtaining the certification and does not preclude you from attending the course.

CEM

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Work Experience
4-year engineering/architectural degree OR Professional Engineer (PE) OR Registered Architect (RA)** AND 3+ years of related* work experience
4-year degree in technology, environmental science, physics, or earth science** AND 4+ years of related* work experience
4-year degree in business (or related field)** AND 5+ years of related* work experience
2-year energy management associate degree** AND 6+ years of related* work experience
2-year associate degree** AND 8+ years of related* work experience
NONE AND 10+ years of related* work experience

*Related experience in energy engineering or energy management.       

** OR equivalent degree

Energy Manager in Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for the Energy Manager In-Training certification, EMIT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CEM course, submit the EMIT certification application, and pass the CEM certification examination. The EMIT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full CEM certification eligibility requirements. To learn more about the upgrade process please click here.

 

CMVP

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Work Experience
Bachelor degree from an accredited university or college in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or related field AND 3 years verified experience in energy management projects involving measurement and verification
Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) AND 3 years verified experience in energy management projects involving measurement and verification
Bachelor unrelated degree from an accredited college or university in a field not specified above AND 5 years verified experience in energy management projects involving measurement and verification
2-year technical degree AND 5 years verified experience in energy management projects involving measurement and verification
NONE AND 10 years verified experience in energy management projects involving measurement and verification
Current status of Certified Energy Manager® (CEM®) or Certified Energy Auditor (CEA™) AND 1 year of verified experience in energy management projects involving measurement and verification

 

CMVP In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for the in-training certification, CMVP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CMVP course, submit the CMVP-IT certification application, and pass the CMVP certification examination. CEA

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Work Experience
4-year engineering/architectural degree OR Professional Engineer (PE) OR Registered Architect (RA)* AND 3+ Years related* experience
4-year unrelated degree AND 4+ years related* experience
2-year associate degree AND 5+ years related* experience
Current Status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) AND 3+ years related* experience
NONE AND 10+ years related* experience

*Related experience in energy auditing and/or participating in a team doing energy assessments.

CEA In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CEA-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CEA course, submit the CEA-IT certification application and pass the CEA certification examination. CBCP

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Work Experience
4-year related* degree OR Professional Engineer (PE) OR Registered Architect (RA) AND 3+ Years related* experience
4-year unrelated degree AND 5+ years related* experience
2-year associate degree AND 5+ years related* experience
NONE AND 10+ years related* experience
Current Status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) AND NONE

*Related degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or related field and related experience in facilities management HVAC or process engineering design, construction project management, electrical/controls design, installation or operations, testing, adjusting and balancing, or building commissioning.

CBCP In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CBCP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CBCP course, submit the CBCP-IT certification application and pass the CBCP certification examination. CIEP

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Work Experience
4-year related* degree OR Professional Engineer (PE) OR Registered Architect (RA)** AND 2+ years of related* work experience
4-year degree unrelated degree AND 3+ years of related* work experience
2-year associate degree AND 4+ years of related* work experience
NONE AND 6+ years of related* work experience
Current Status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) AND NONE

*Related degree in technology, plant engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical/electrical engineering and related experience in manufacturing or industrial facilities or plant facilities operations.

** OR equivalent degree

CIEP in Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CIEP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CIEP preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the CIEP-IT certification application under step two below, and pass the CIEP certification examination. CAP

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Work Experience
4-year engineering/architectural degree AND NONE
4-year degree in business (or related field) AND 3+ years of related* work experience
2-year associate degree AND 4+ years of related* work experience
NONE AND 8+ years of related* work experience
Current Status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) AND NONE

*Related experience in energy/carbon management.

CAP in Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CAP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CAP preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the CAP-IT certification application under step two below, and pass the CAP certification examination. 50001 CP

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Work Experience
4-year engineering/architectural degree OR Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) OR Registered Architect (RA)** AND 3+ years of related* work experience
4-year degree in technology, environmental science, physics, or earth science** AND 4+ years of related* work experience
4-year degree in business (or related field)** AND 5+ years of related* work experience
2-year energy management associate degree** AND 6+ years of related* work experience
2-year associate degree** AND 8+ years of related* work experience
NONE AND 10+ years of related* work experience

*Related experience requires experience in both energy engineering/ energy projects and energy management systems. Individuals undertaking the certification examination will be expected to have a strong understanding in all aspects of energy management that would be typically encountered in a reasonably large commercial building. Persons holding CEM or CEA certification or similar could be reasonably expected to have the level of technical knowledge required. Candidates will also be expected to have a reasonably strong understanding of the structure of ISO management standards and their application in organizations. This is NOT intended as an introduction certification to ISO 50001 or as an introduction to energy management.

50001 CP in Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, 50001CP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a 50001 CP preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the 50001CP-IT certification application under step two below, and pass the 50001CP certification examination. The 50001CP-IT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full 50001 CP certification eligibility requirements.
