For the 21st running of a Bed Race by the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa three objectives were set:

  1. To raise funds for the community. We did, over $25,000 for projects of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Foundation and the Queensway Carleton hospital Foundation. This was done with the help of Accora Village and our other sponsors, our racing teams, and our organizational partners.

  2. Promote the work of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Foundation and the ongoing work that it does. With the help of Ottawa Markets, Heritage Canada and Bell Media) we got to promote the race.

  3. To have some fun. The cheers, smiles and laughs at the event would be a evidence that.

Special Notes from the Race

  • Les Suites Hotel walked away with 3 prizes (in Fastest Bed, Team Spirit and a the Hotel Heat).

  • The International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 96 had three prizes as well (Fund Raising, Fastest Bed, the Hotel Builders). They were the first team to have three generations of racers, and this year they added a second third generation runner.

2024 Accora Village Bed Race for Kiwanis

The annual Accora Village Bed Race for the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the highlights of Winterlude. 30 teams of 4 runners and one rider compete with modified and decorated beds for honours and prizes as the fastest bed, the best decorated bed and the best fund raisers. Put your team together for the race on February 17, 2024. This would have been the 42nd running of the Bed Race, and the 21st organized by the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa. 2024 here we come.

This event is a lot of fun for participants, and the funds raised goes to support the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa's projects and the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation.

Registration for 2024

Registration and pledging are available online

  • Team registration is $300 and the fee is waived if your team raises $1000 or more in pledges

  • Your team gets a minimum 2 races with a potential for up to 5

  • Great prizes and bragging rights

  • There are a limited prebuilt beds are available for purchase of $200

Details

The race will take place this year on York Street near Dalhousie, with

  • beds arrive on site and decorating begins at 10:00

  • team registration, waivers and pledges starting at 11:00

  • the Parade of Beds at 12:30,

  • racing between 13:00 and 14:30,

  • and the after party starting at 14:300, at The Senate on Clarence

How Can You Participate?

This is a great Winter event that is a fun way to enjoy Winterlude as a participant. All of the funds raised go to support the projects of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa and the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation.

You can get involved in the Accora Village Bed Race by Kiwanis any of these ways:

  1. Enter a team. Or more than one team to get some team building opportunities. The cost would be $300 for registration, and we have a limited number of beds for $200 if your choose not to build one. The registration is waived if more than $1000 in pledges are raised. 

  2. Support our Youth Groups: You can support one of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa’s Key Clubs or the Kiwanis 211 Air Cadet Squadron with a $500 in sponsorship for the race. The Youth Group would then decorate their bed with materials provided by the sponsor, and the sponsor would be mentioned during each of the Youth's races.

  3. Sponsor a heat: There are approximately 20 heats during the event, and each one can be sponsored for $500 which goes directly to the Club.

  4. Pledge: You can pledge for anyone with one of the the existing teams.

43rd Annual Accora Village Bed Race

On Saturday, February 17, 2024, the Accora Village Bed Race will take place on York Street west of Dalhousie from 12:00 and 14:00. The event begins with a parade of beds where judges select the best decorated bed, and is followed by heats of 4 beds racing a 50 metre course.

“The Bed Race is without a doubt, the most fun event that the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa runs each year” said Peter Charboneu, President of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa. “The race is a great chance for the community to both support this great Kiwanis event, and have a lot of fun at the same time.”

This year the event is again being sponsored by Accora Village. Ferguslea Properties Limited Vice President Steve Ryan said, “We are looking forward to helping the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa in the many community service activities that it is involved in.”

Since 1917 the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa has been active in fund raising and community involvement as a not-for-profit organization. The largest Kiwanis Club in Canada, the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the most active and dynamic service clubs in the world. Each year the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa provides thousands of hours of community service and raises $500,000 for the local community. One of the 8,000 Clubs in Kiwanis International, the Club has met every Friday since 1917. Projects carried on by Kiwanis in the Ottawa area include the Kiwanis Music Festival, Air Cadets, Key Club and Direct Assistance.

43e Course de lits Accora Village

Le samedi 17 février 2024, la course de lits Accora Village aura lieu sur la rue York entre 12 h et 14 h. L’événement débutera par un défilé des lits afin que les juges puissent se prononcer sur le lit le mieux décoré, le défilé sera suivi des courses qui s’effectuent entre 4 lits sur une distance de 50 mètres.

« La course de lits est sans contredit l’activité la plus amusante organisée par le Club Kiwanis d’Ottawa tous les ans.» a dit Peter Charboneau, président du Club Kiwanis d’Ottawa. « La course est l’occasion parfaite pour la communauté d’appuyer cette excellente activité du Club Kiwanis tout en s’amusant. »

Encore une fois cette année, l’événement est commandité par Accora Village. Steve Ryan, vice-président de Ferguslea Properties Limited, a dit « Nous sommes heureux d’aider le Club Kiwanis d’Ottawa dans ses nombreuses activités de service communautaire. »

Depuis 1917, le Club Kiwanis d’Ottawa organise des campagnes de financement et s’implique dans la communauté en tant qu’organisme sans but lucratif. The Accora Village Bed Race for Kiwanis is in a week!

The Bed Race team with the help of some wonderful people from Trane prepared the beds for the race on February 17th. Thanks for support:

  • Pedro Storage: Who supplied the storage location for beds over the off season

  • Manulife: Who supplied the warehouse space to assemble and test the beds

  • Surgenors: Who supplied the truck used to move the beds

  • Trane: 6 volunteers helped move, assemble, test and repack the beds

International Union of Elevator Constructors Back to Defend Titles

The IUEC Local 96 was part of the Bed Race before the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, going back to the inital races run by the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The team includes members who are now the third generation of supports of the race.

Over the years the IUEC has won the award for the fastest bed and well as the best fund raisers many times, often in the same year.

In 2023 they won both Best Fundraisers, and Fastest Bed.

For the 20th running of a Bed Race by the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa three objectives were set:

  1. To raise funds for the community. We did, over $35,000 for projects of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Foundation and the Queensway Carleton hospital Foundation. This was done with the help of Accora Village and our other sponsors, our racing teams, and our organizational partners.

  2. Promote the work of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Foundation and the ongoing work that it does. With the help of the Ottawa Senators we ran a mini race between periods of a Sens game. With the help of Ottawa Markets, Heritage Canada and Bell Media (at 7:50 in the clip) we got to promote the race.

  3. To have some fun. The cheers, smiles and laughs at the event would be a evidence that.

Team Building

The Accora Village Bed Race is a great opportunity for companies and organizations to do some team building. The Bed Race can include special heats for teams to compete, and WSP has made a whole weekend of team building around the event.

Exhibition Race at Canadian Tire Centre

Between periods of an Ottawa Senators Game, 3 teams ran an exhibition Bed Race for the fans. The race included the Title Sponsor, Accora Village; multi time winner as best Fundraiser, the International Union of Elevator Constructors local 96; and Heat Sponsor, Trane. The funds from the race will go to support the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation and Kiwanis projects including Key Clubs.

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Foundation would like to thank the Ottawa Senators for making this happen. The Sens have been a great partner with the Club over the years.
