Competence

Makes recommendations to Council on continuing competence requirements and provides for the review, investigation and assessment of the competence of physicians. Review the committee’s terms of reference to find out more.

Complaint Review Committees (CRC) & Hearing Tribunals

A CRC reviews dismissed complaints at the request of complainants, while a Hearing Tribunal considers evidence and arguments against physicians in adjudicating charges of unprofessional conduct.

Infection Prevention & Control (IPAC) Advisory Committee

CPSA works with a multi-disciplinary team of provincial infection prevention and control (IPAC) experts and practising physicians to develop our IPAC and medical device reprocessing (MDR) standards. They direct and advise the program on preventing the transmission of infectious disease in medical clinics and ensure consistency with the expectations of the Provincial Medical Officer of Health.

The Summative Assessment Advisory Committee reviews all physician summative assessment documentation and prepares recommendations to the Assistant Registrar, Registration, regarding each physician’s application for registration on the General Register.

Medical Facility Accreditation Committee

The Medical Facility Accreditation Committee (MFAC) is a standing CPSA Council committee. Under the Health Professions Act, this 9-member committee oversees the work of the other advisory committees and advises Council on policy. Anti-Racism Anti-Discrimination Action Advisory Committee

The Anti-Racism Anti-Discrimination Action Advisory Committee (ARADAAC) will provide advice to CPSA Council and Registrar on priority areas where CPSA has the greatest authority to action and influence change to disrupt racism and discrimination within CPSA as an organization and within regulated member practice. Building Fund Initiatives Working Group

Following Council’s approval of allocating $5 million from the Building Fund Reserve to the CPSA Healthier Albertan Grant, the Building Fund Initiatives Working Group (Working Group) has been tasked with reviewing applications against approved decision criteria, monitoring the effectiveness and efficiency of the CPSA Heathier Albertan Grant process and providing regular updates to Council.

Working Group membership composition is intended to reflect diverse experiences and backgrounds from across the province, including but not limited to:

  • Experience in medicine and/or a social science or health-related field
  • Granting experience
  • Indigenous representation
  • Geographic representation (urban or rural)
  • Involvement with community organizations
  • CPSA Council representation
  • Underserved community and/or groups representation (e.g.: racialized groups)

The Working Group is an ad hoc committee of Council for a period and frequency to be determined by Council until the funding for the CPSA Healthier Albertan Grant has been distributed. Read the Building Fund Initiatives Working Group’s terms of reference to find out more.

Council Executive

Sets the agenda for Council meetings, meets regularly with CPSA’s Registrar (conducting a formal job performance appraisal at the end of the year and attends to other matters requiring attention between Council meetings. Review the Executive Committee’s terms of reference to find out more.

Governance

Ensures compliance with applicable regulations and practices, plans and promotes learning opportunities for Council members to enhance effectiveness, and is responsible for developing recommendations for appointments to Committees. Indigenous Advisory Circle

As Alberta’s medical regulator, we play an important role in reconciliation, which includes responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action, particularly those actions that relate to health.

The Indigenous Advisory Circle, established by CPSA Council in December 2021, focuses on listening to and learning from those with lived Indigenous experiences across Alberta. Through collaboration and creating a safe space to share these experiences and ideas, the Circle helps CPSA reflect on our own processes and identify how we can better support Indigenous patients and better guide the physicians who care for them. Advisory Committee on IPAC: physician with expertise in cosmetic and esthetic medicine

About you

Are you a physician with a clinical focus on esthetics, cosmetic dermatology and cosmetic medicine? If so, consider an active role in profession-led governance by joining CPSA’s Infection Prevention & Control (IPAC) Advisory Committee.

About the opportunity

We are seeking the expertise of a physician with industry and practical expertise in cosmetic and esthetic medicine to provide their unique insights and to complement the current composition of the IPAC Advisory Committee. Preference will be given to physicians who oversee a clinic, or clinics, where common esthetic invasive procedures, such as cosmetic injections, are undertaken.

The IPAC Advisory Committee is a standing subcommittee of the Competence Committee. Its purposes are to:

  • ensure uniform implementation of accepted standards for the prevention of transmission of infectious disease in physician offices and clinics, and
  • promote IPAC best practices, including medical device reprocessing, through education of the profession.

The IPAC Advisory Committee provides technical expertise and advice to guide the IPAC program. In this role, you would be contributing to the strategic direction of the program, advising on the adoption of IPAC requirements, guidance, and program positions, and helping ensure standards of practice are implemented effectively. Advisory Committee members understand the importance of self‐regulation and recognize program activities help ensure Albertans receive safe medical care.

Expected time commitment

Meetings are held 4 times a year (twice virtually and twice in person).  Additional meetings may be called as required.

Advisory Committee on Pulmonary Function Diagnostics: respirologist

About you

Are you a respirologist? Are you interested in medical facility accreditation?

If so, consider an active role in profession-led governance by joining CPSA’s Advisory Committee on Pulmonary Function Diagnostics.

The Advisory Committee on Pulmonary Function Laboratories oversees CPSA’s accreditation program for pulmonary function laboratories for private facilities as defined in CPSA bylaws and for public facilities through contract with Alberta Health Services. The committee promotes high standards of medical practice in diagnostic facilities by monitoring facility compliance with evidence-based standards.

CPSA Accreditation Advisory Committees report to and provide direction to the Medical Facility Accreditation Committee, which is accountable to CPSA Council.

Qualifications

  • Experienced general radiologist with additional modality expertise in Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography, Bone Densitometry, (expertise in Mammography is preferred but not required);
  • Preferably based South or Calgary Zones; and
  • In good standing with CPSA.

Expected time commitment

Meetings are held five times a year and at the request of the Chair.  Additional meetings may be called as required.

Complaint Review Committee (CRC) and Hearing Tribunals

Do you have experience in dispute resolution?

We are currently seeking physicians for our Complaint Review Committee (CRC) and Hearing Tribunals.

A CRC reviews dismissed complaints at the request of complainants, while a Hearing Tribunal considers evidence and arguments in adjudicating a charge of unprofessional conduct against a physician. Both CRCs and Hearing Tribunals are made up of physician and public members.

We promise an interesting, challenging, and very satisfying experience.

CRC and Hearing Tribunal positions are open to physicians of all specialties who are in good standing with CPSA. Experience serving on tribunals or committees, in formal administrative positions, or assessing medical students, residents, or physicians for readiness to enter practice are valuable assets.

Expected time commitment is one day for a CRC meeting, one-to-two days for a Hearing Tribunal, plus up to 15 hours depending on the complexity of a case. The Chair of the CRC or Hearing Tribunal is also responsible for preparing decision documents with the assistance of legal counsel. Decision writing training will be provided as this position requires members to synthesize large amounts of information and write decisions.

Honorarium and expenses are paid at CPSA rates, and training is provided.

Please note that physicians wishing to be nominated to this committee must have been in full-time independent practice for at least five years.

Indigenous Advisory Circle

CPSA is seeking Indigenous individuals, physicians and physician assistants to serve on the Indigenous Advisory Circle (the Circle).

The Circle is an advisory committee, guiding CPSA in areas where we can enhance the healthcare experiences Indigenous people have with physicians and physician assistants.

About you

Are you:

  • an Indigenous individual or member of a First Nation, Métis or Inuit community who is interested in sharing your perspectives on Indigenous health and physician/physician assistant care?
  • passionate about improving the experience Indigenous patients have in the health system, specifically with physicians and physician assistants?
  • an Indigenous or non-Indigenous physician or physician assistant who provides care to Indigenous patients and communities in Alberta?

If so, consider applying to join the Circle to take an active role in guiding medical regulation.

About the opportunity

CPSA’s mandate is to protect the public through the regulation physicians and physician assistants in Alberta. As a member of the Circle, you would provide your perspectives/insights and advice to guide CPSA as we work towards safer healthcare experiences Indigenous people have with our regulated members.

We are seeking First Nations, Métis or Inuit individuals to join the Circle, including:

  • individuals who live in urban or rural communities, on and off reserve, and on and off settlement within Alberta
  • individuals with experience in health-related fields

We are also seeking Indigenous and non-Indigenous physician and physician assistant members of the Circle with experience providing care to Indigenous patients and communities.

Expected time commitment

Meetings are 2-3 hours in length and held 4 times a year (virtually).  Additional meetings, including those held in person, may be called as required.

Honoraria is provided and expenses covered in accordance with CPSA policy.

Medical Facility Accreditation Committee (MFAC): physician members

Are you a physician with an interest in medical facility accreditation and a specialty in one or more of the following:

  • Family/rural medicine
  • Emergency
  • Internal medicine
  • Psychiatry

If so, consider an active role in profession-led governance by joining CPSA’s Medical Facility Accreditation Committee (MFAC).

Under the Health Professions Act (HPA), MFAC members are appointed to advise on accreditation standards for diagnostic and treatment facilities:

    • Diagnostic imaging
    • Medical laboratories
    • Pulmonary function testing
    • Neurophysiologic testing
    • Non-hospital surgical facilities
    • Sleep medicine diagnostics
    • Cardiac stress testing
    • Hyperbaric oxygen facilities
    • Psychedelic assisted psychotherapy

Committee members work together to establish and administer reviews and assessments of such facilities, to confirm they are operating in accordance with CPSA’s standards.

Qualifications:

  • In good standing with CPSA.

Expected time commitment:

The MFAC meets two to three times a year. All meetings are virtual. In addition to attending meetings, when preparing advice for Council, committee members are expected to review reports, scientific literature, standards in other jurisdictions and recommendations from consultants and other CPSA committees.
