Olympian Georgina Simmerling with world cup rider Ed Veal, who will both be leading the LakeRide.

NewRoad's LakeRide in support of Southlake Regional Health Centre this September will be led by two Olympians and a World Cup cyclist.

The fundraiser bike ride will feature Ed Veal, a Canadian cyclist who has competed in the Commonwealth Games, the PanAm Games, and the Cycling World Cup. It will also be led by Canadian Olympian Georgia Simmerling, who competes in both track cycling in the summer and skiing in the winter games. The final leader will be Lauriane Genest, who made her Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 games where she earned a bronze medal in track cycling.

Local riders are invited to register and join these star athletes in the ride on Sept. 25. There are 10 km, 20 km, 45 km, 80 km, and 125 km route options so participants can choose what works best for them.

The ride will depart from the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre on Mulock Drive and take riders by the lake. There will be a barbeque at the finish line and live entertainment provided by the band Rubber Tire Peep Show.

This is the seventh annual LakeRide organized by NewRoads. Funds raised through registration fees and donations will go toward mental health programs at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

The ride in 2021 resulted in a donation of $106,139 for the hospital. This year the fundraising goal is set at $250,000.

Riders can register as an individual or join a team. All participants will receive a branded buff. Anyone who raised more than $250 will receive specialized socks, anyone who raises $500 will get a cycling shirt, and anyone who raises $1,000 will receive special shorts as well.

Registration is open online and community members can also donate to the event on Southlake Foundation's website
