Child sexual abuse is an important public health issue. Unfortunately, despite the vast implementation of prevention initiatives, sexual abuse is still considered a relatively common experience in the lives of youth. Results from a meta-analysis of 217 studies published between 1980 and 2008, including close to ten million participants worldwide, suggest that 18% of women and 7.6% of men will experience sexual abuse before reaching the age of 18 (Stoltenborgh et al., 2011). Another meta-analysis obtained similar findings with rates of 8–31% for girls and 3–17% for boys (Barth et al., 2013). In analyzing data from the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence, Gewirtz-Meydan and Finkelhor (2020) found rates of sexual abuse and assault for the sample of 0–17 years old to be 5.6% for girls and 1.9% for boys.
