Webinar Series on Building New VAW Shelters and Transition Houses

Are you interested in building a new violence against women (VAW) shelter or transition house, but not sure where to start? Or maybe you’re in the early stages of a capital project and feeling overwhelmed? Our new webinar series is for you!

WSC has created a three-part webinar series to help demystify the development process and offer a clearer understanding of what it takes to build a new violence against women (VAW) shelter or transition house. Our goal is to make the development process more approachable and shed light on the various challenges involved. Over three sessions, we’ll cover all stages of the development process, from feasibility to design and development to construction and operations. We’ll also address questions such as who to hire on a team, when to bring them on board, and the roles everyone plays throughout the process.

These webinars will be presented by Kyla Tanner and Megan Golfetto from WSC’s Second Stage Transitional Housing New Build team, and by Amanda Owens, Executive Director of ‘Ksan Society, a VAW organization that has experience with the development process.

Introduction to the Development Process, Part 1: Feasibility

Thursday, May 16 from 1:00-2:30pm ET

This first webinar of a three-part series will offer an overview of the development process and the first phase of development: Feasibility. You will learn about setting the vision for your project, who to hire on your team, selecting a site, conceptual drawings, and early financial analysis, among other topics. Feasibility is a critical time for you to determine if your project is viable.

This webinar will be presented in English with simultaneous interpretation into French. It will be recorded. Register here.

Introduction to the Development Process, Part 2: Design and Development

Thursday, May 30 from 1:00-2:30pm ET

This second webinar in our three-part series will dive into the second phase of development: Design and Development. You will learn about hiring the rest of the design team, acquiring a site, conducting site studies, designing your building, refining financial analysis, securing funding, and planning approvals, among other topics. During Design and Development, you will begin to see what your project is going to look like and how you will pay for it.

This webinar will be presented in English with simultaneous interpretation into French. It will be recorded. Register here.

Introduction to the Development Process, Part 3: Operations and Construction

Thursday, June 13 from 1:00-2:30pm ET

The third and final webinar of this three-part series will focus on both the third and fourth phases of the development process: Construction and Operations. For construction, you will learn about construction administration activities, schedule and budget monitoring, funding advances, and preparing for operations. This is the phase where your vision starts taking physical shape as you actually build your structure and prepare to rent out the units. You will also learn about resident move-in, funding wrap-up, ongoing property management, and maintenance responsibilities for the Operations phase. The final phase is the realization of your idea and the completion of all the preceding steps.
