About Us

FSEC Energy Research Center Building Aerial Which has experience in renewable energy systems and building science The Florida Solar Energy Center® (FSEC®), is the state’s premier energy research institution. Created by the Florida Legislature in 1975 to advance research, development and education in solar energy, FSEC’s focus includes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable transportation research, demonstration, and education.

FSEC® is administered by the University of Central Florida and is located in Cocoa, Florida.

Mission

Although energy research programs and projects have changed throughout the years, FSEC’s mission remains the same:

Research and develop energy technologies that enhance Florida’s and the nation’s economy and environment, and to educate the public, students and practitioners on the results of the research.

Research Areas

Exploring FSEC Energy Research Center brochure coverFSEC® has more than 45 years of experience in renewable energy systems and building science. The Center’s 70-member staff includes professionals with expertise in engineering, energy research, building science, energy and policy analysis, as well as education and training.

Research at FSEC is based on field monitoring, computer simulations, and controlled experiments in highly-instrumented laboratories. As a result of FSEC’s extensive research capabilities, its programs are nationally and internationally recognized, and include:

Funding & Partners

The Center performs contracted research and training in partnership with government, industry, nonprofit organizations, private sponsors, and national laboratories. Funding totals $6 to $12 million annually, in addition to receiving $3 million in operating funds.

Location

FSEC is located on Eastern Florida State College and the University of Central Florida’s Cocoa campus. The 20-acre research complex is 35 miles east of UCF’s Orlando campus.
