We, the undersigned full-time faculty and librarians stand in
strong solidarity with Laurier’s contract faculty and support their struggle
for better and more equitable working conditions.
Contract faculty play a vital role at Laurier, in delivering
courses, supporting students and programs, and upholding the university's academic mission. Current working conditions for contract faculty are
unfair and inequitable, demonstrating a lack of regard for their contributions.
Contract faculty teach over 50% of students for a mere 5% of
Laurier’s budget. More than 2/3 of contract faculty earn their entire income
teaching at Laurier, many teaching the equivalent of a full-time
teaching load. Yet they earn half of what full-time faculty are paid for teaching the
same courses, and they must endure precarious employment “on contract” for
decades. The majority of contract faculty do not have access to Laurier’s
pension, and they are the only group of employees on Laurier’s campuses who are
consistently denied university-paid benefits.
As full-time faculty and librarians, we often take for granted the
kinds of job security, benefits, and opportunities for advancement that contract faculty fight for during every collective agreement negotiation. Contract faculty deserve better
compensation; they deserve university-paid benefits; they deserve better access
to the Laurier pension plan; they deserve job security. They deserve more
respect from the University for the essential work they do for students, for
our programs and faculties, and for their professions.
To contract faculty at Laurier: We see you. We value you. We
respect you. We support you in this fight.
To Laurier Administration: You have a responsibility to meet your
equity commitments and to set an example as a fair and equitable place to work.
You have the ability and responsibility to negotiate a decent and equitable
collective agreement with contract faculty.
The demands contract faculty are making are reasonable and we call
on the Administration to live up to its equity commitments by ensuring decent
working and learning conditions for everyone at this institution.
