Graduate Mental Health Survey

This survey is for informational purposes only to help the 2023 AGSU Mental Health Coordinators (Adrianna and Eman) best promote wellbeing amongst graduate students in our department. By clicking continue and answering these questions you consent to take part in this online survey which will ask questions about your program of study, current experiences of mental wellness/unwellness, and opinions on potential initiatives. You will not be asked to provide your name, email, or other identifying information beyond your approximate year and program. All questions will have a prefer not to answer option.

The Government of Canada defines ‘Mental Health’ as “[t]he capacities of each and all of us to feel, think, and act in ways that enhance our ability to enjoy life and deal with the challenges we face… a positive sense of emotional and spiritual well-being that respects the importance of culture, equity, social justice, interconnections, and personal dignity” (Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, 2006).

Given this definition, how would you rate your mental health over the past semester on a scale from 1 to 5? You may provide a brief explanation if you feel comfortable.

1 being very poor the majority of the time.
5 being that you felt very mentally healthy the majority of the time.
Can you tell us about the top 1-3 issues, structures, events etc. that have negatively impacted your mental health this semester? If you experience a mental illness that is not properly accommodated in this space this would also be the place to tell us about these sorts of experiences if you would like.
Can you tell us about the top 1-3 experiences, factors, accommodations or initiatives that have positively impacted your mental health at any time while you’ve been a graduate student?
Can you tell us about any actions or initiatives you would like to see the AGSU or department take that would have a positive impact on your mental health? Feasible suggestions are appreciated, but we are open to listening to any suggestions you may want to share. We will try our best to take these suggestions into account moving forward.

The next few questions ask your opinions about some initiatives the mental health coordinators are currently planning:

Because imposter syndrome can be so harmful to graduate student mental health we are hoping to demystify the hidden curriculum.

We aim to do so by creating an anonymous virtual question box for students to ask anything about graduate school.

We will then collect the questions over each month and reach out to faculty and upper year graduate students to create short videos answering these questions.

We aim to then post these response videos to our social media platforms.

Is this an initiative that you would find helpful?

Do you have any suggestions for improving the implementation of the above question box initiative to better serve you?
The second initiative we are currently planning is to create a space of relaxation where students can take joyful breaks from their academic work and foster a sense of communal care in the anthropology building.

We aim to accomplish this by updating the graduate student lounge on the 3rd floor (to the extent possible within the limitations of custodial rules).

What items or restructuring would you like to see in that room that would improve your ability to take joyful breaks or feel more connected to the anthropology community as a graduate community?

Some examples can be: adding more color to the room, having a more comfortable seating arrangement, having communal games, etc.
The final four questions ask for contributions from you as we seek to create communal care resources for our graduate student community.

We are planning to create a cookbook for anthropology graduate students with quick to make, inexpensive, and healthy recipes that we would share as a PDF and keep as a hard copy in the graduate student lounge.

Do you have any recipes you would like to share with us to add to the cookbook?

If you want credit for your recipe in the book you can also email Eman or Adrianna with your recipe instead of submitting it in the box below. Links to your favourite recipe are also permitted!

We would like to create a resource directing students to free self-care and other mental health resources that other students have used and found helpful.

Do you have any online meditations, exercise classes, or other mental health resources that you would recommend? Links are appreciated for free online resources.

We would like to create a safe exchange/donation space for students which involves donating resources such as fidget toys, coloring books, other de-stressor/stim gadgets that our student cohort can utilize during seminar classes and return after to the shared spaces.

Would you like to participate in this donation?

We would also like to invite our student body to donate and freely take non-perishable food/clothing items for students to take as they need?

Would you be interested in this initiative (either for donation or in need of food/clothing items)?

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey! Adrianna and Eman will take these suggestions to heart and will try to execute these initiatives to the best of their ability and within the departments regulations.
