Since 2018, the Chaleur Regional Hospital and the Edmundston Regional Hospital have been participating in a national quality improvement project targeting practices around the care offered to newborns and mothers in hospitals. The teams implemented best care practices, based on the Baby-Friendly Initiative Ten Steps. This initiative aims to protect, encourage and support breastfeeding. Best practice has helped improve:
• Care practices that promote breastfeeding and thus increase exclusive breastfeeding rates (e.g., infant/parent proximity, skin-to-skin contact after caesarean delivery, practice of manual expression of colostrum)
• Safety of care relating to the practice of skin-to-skin contact;
• Reliability of care by ensuring the workforce has the necessary skills;
• Reliability of care by carrying out case audits and relative surveys.
