Elevating the Visibility of Minority and Women Physicists on Wikipedia

As part of APS’s continued efforts to elevate the visibility of minority and women physicists on Wikipedia, we will be holding a second Wiki Scientists Course focused on creating biographies of minority and women physicists. The class will meet online once a week between September 21 and October 30.

Ten scholarships are available, or you can register for the course directly and pay the $500 registration fee. The application deadline is August 14.

With approximately 500 million views a month, Wikipedia is one of the most frequently consulted reference resources in the world. But less than 18% of the biographies on the site belong to women. This issue became even more apparent when it was found there was no Wikipedia entry for Donna Strickland prior to her receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018.

The previous Wikipedia editing course sponsored by APS resulted in the creation of 20 articles, edits to 109 articles, and the addition of 567 references. You can read more about the experiences of the project in APS News.
