Dodge the Stigma Champions, Bouncing Balls

Dodge the Stigma

On September 29th & 30th, the JDSS Jack Chapter held a Dodge Ball Tournament for all secondary students during their lunch to support “Dodging the Stigma" for mental health

Participants were required to make teams of 6 8 players that would be willing to sacrifice their lunch in order to compete

Thursday started off strong with 6 teams trying their best to become the 'Victor of Dodge Ball'

Each game had 3 rounds where it was decided who won by the best 2 out of 3 rounds

The game play Friday was intense; The first game ended with a 1 vs 1 match against Bouncing Balls and Popeyes Chicken Nuggets

The overall winner, Bouncing Balls took home the title of 'Dodgeball Champions' after defeating the Average Joe's

The JDSS Jack Chapter would like to extend their thanks to all teams for participating, students for coming to watch, and congratulate the winning team, Bouncing Balls, who truly “Dodged the Stigma ”

Waste-Free Lunch October 26th

Hosted by the Green Committee

Mission Statement:

"To raise awareness of environmental issues by encouraging and developing sustainable practices, both individually and collectively"

MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT

The first event of the school year hosted by the Green Committee is a waste free lunch that influences the idea of using reusable containers, essentially having no garbage in your lunch When a Waste Free Lunch is brought to school on Oct 26th, there is a chance to win prizes for your participation and help achieve the goal of JDSS becoming bronze certified with Eco Schools Canada

Interested in Green Committee? Meetings are held every Tuesday at noon for grades 7 12

The Great Big Crunch October 20th Hosted by the Breakfast Club & Green Committee

On Thursday the 20th, at 9:45 am, JDSS participated in taking a "Big Crunch". The Great Big Crunch an anti silence movement in which students, teachers, parents and others passionate about food make noise for healthy school food from local places!

My name is Kaylee Lantz I am the Students' Council President for the 2022 2023 school year I have been part of the Students' Council since grade 9, and I have enjoyed growing with the council throughout my high school years

The journey from Grade Representative to President has been an unforgettable one I get to work with a passionate and wonderful group of council members to organize events for the student body, and I am so excited about everything that we have planned for this school year Among other things, you can look forward to food days, spirit weeks, dances, buyouts, guest speakers, and assemblies

With hopes of it being a 'normal' school year, I encourage you to get involved in school activities We have a variety of sports teams, clubs, and committees, so there is something for everyone

If you need anything, please do not hesitate to email me, or stop me in the halls I am here for you, and if I can't help, I will find someone who can The school is staffed with amazing people who are always happy to help as well Everyone is hard at work to make this year a great one!

Truth & Reconciliation

In 1996, the last Residential School in Canada was closed after decades of harm toward the Indigenous People of Canada

In 2015, Canada labelled their actions as a 'Cultural Genocide' at Canada's Truth & Reconciliation Commission

In May of 2021, the discovery of remains for 215 children were buried at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C, publically showing how detrimental residential schools were.

Later that year, Canada formally apologized to all Indigenous people, naming a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

To commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by spreading awareness throughout the school, Ms MacLaughlin and her students held a special event outside the cafeteria on September 30th At this event participants were invited to write on an eagle feather with an appropriate word to finish the prompt, "Every Child Should Feel...". Students Brynne Klages and Evie Kingston explained the event as a way to offer words of encouragement for the survivors of Residential Schools and the ones who did not make it home They described the event as a way to “Offer them justice”, and “Apologize for the actions of past generations "

Ashlynn is a determined athlete on the Cross Country and basketball teams where she demonstrates great teamwork and leadership skills

Ashlynn may be a small player, but her skills make her seem as if she is 6 ft tall and mighty.

On the Track for Terry

Way to go Trojans!

On October 3rd the Terry Fox Walk took place at JDSS, with the vow of there always being “a Trojan on the Track for Terry” Throughout the whole day, there was a numerous amount of participation from the students walking or running the track by themselves, with a team, or with a class

A total of $1382 15 was raised to contribute to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research Mrs Meulensteen’s class collected the most donations with over $500 raised They were ded a Pizza Party for their huge ribution to the Terry Fox Foundation

Connor is a setter and leads the team, always giving his maximum effort on and off the court

Connor has played on the volleyball and golf teams so far this year, always providing a great attitude and showing great sportsmanship.

Genders & Sexualities Alliances, or GSAs for short, are student run organizations that unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities GSAs have evolved beyond their traditional role to serve as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth in middle schools and high schools, and have emerged as vehicles for deep social change related to gender, and educational justice

The School Newspaper can be found through a limited amount of paper copies, QR Codes, and on the JDSS website.

A growing body of research confirms that the presence of a GSA has a positive and lasting effect on student health, wellness, and academic performance It can also protect students from harassment based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and improve school climates for all students in the long term

The JDSS GSA for secondary students meets bi monthly in room 232 The schedule and information for this club can be found outside room 232 on the GSA bulletin board For more information please speak to either Mrs Mitchell or Mrs Thompson Inquiries and information about the JDSS GSA for elementary students can be directed to Mrs Oelschlagel

Elementary Soccer

On Wednesday, October 5th, JDSS held their first ever soccer tournament for elementary students. With the help of the Athletic Council, the tournament was a huge success and many are looking forward to its return for many soccer seasons to come. Eight teams in total attended the tournament, with three of them coming from our very own JDSS

Teams came to participate in the tournament

starting at 9:45 AM from Holland Chatsworth, Kincardine, and Owen Sound. With a total of 18 games played throughout the day, JDSS came in third place, Owen Sound in second, and Holland Chatsworth won the tournament.

On Friday, October 21st, there will be another elementary soccer tournament held at JDSS Good Luck Trojans!

Athletic Council

Volleyball, basketball, and cross country? You got it! Sports at JDSS have started.

The Senior Girls Basketball team has already played 2 games and is at a W1 L1 While the Junior Girls Basketball are W2 L1 Way to go Senior & Junior Girls!

Boys Basketball is set to start in November

Boys Volleyball is underway as the Senior team is W2 L2 and the Junior team is W3 L1.

Great job Boys!

Cross Country athletes have been training hard and are ready for the first meet of the season on Thursday, October 20th

The Boys Baseball team went W1 L0 on Round Robin Game Day, qualifying to play in the semi finals on Friday the 14th

Beating St Mary’s to qualify for the BAA finals, the boys were working hard to win gold Unfortunately, they were just a few runs short to take home the gold medal Proudly placing second, they are excited about next season We are coming for you Sacred!

Do you like school sports but don't want to play for the varsity team? Stay tuned for school intramurals where you can play on a team without the competition of other schools!

Volleyball intramurals are currently running with finals Friday the 21st at lunch

The last week of October, Athletic Council will be selling $2 treat bags with profits going towards athletics in the school

I am Victoria and this semester for my Co op placement I am working with Ms Weppler and create a school newspaper for the students of our school

I am in grade 12 and have always had a passion for writing, which turned into an aspiration to be a Journalist This semester I plan to deliver news from things like clubs, sports, and events, making them accessible whenever and wherever you are

I look forward to bringing my best work forward for everyone to read
