SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW...

1. INFORMATION: We strive to provide you with useful information to help you with bull selection. In addition to the data in this catalog, current weights and scrotal measurements will be available sale day. 2. COWHERD: Our cows are not pampered! They graze on swaths and native grass through the winter until calving starts at the beginning of February. It makes sense to buy bulls from a cowherd that works for a living! 3. EPDs: We believe that EPDs are a useful tool to help evaluate certain traits in our cattle, BUT... Quality cattle are more important than the numbers used to describe them. 4. HERD HEALTH: The Windy Willows herd is on a herd health program with the South West Animal Health Centre, Swift Current, SK. All calves are vaccinated with Inforce 3 at birth and with MLV vaccine and Clostridial vaccine in June and again at weaning. All pregnant females are vaccinated annually with MLV for IBR, PI3, BVD and BRSV. 5. DISPOSITION: We continue to get compliments about the disposition of our bulls from everyone who works with them. We are a family operation and disposition is as important to us as it is to you. 6. GUARANTEE: Our goal is to provide you with quality bulls capable of getting your cows pregnant. Bull & Female Sale

Again, I am very, very proud to be able to continue to assist Michelle & Hillary in presenting their 18th Annual Bull & Female Sale. Offering has changed a bit this year with having more Two-Year-Old Bulls on offer and they are a very consistent set with longevity kept in mind. Large pens for exercise are a key in developing these bulls. This will also be the last year of the Red Angus bulls on offer as well from Windy Willows. The yearling bulls in the offering are also a very uniform set with great data on them, the EPD spreads on these bulls will show that as well when you come to analyze them. The females again have been gone threw extensively by myself, Roger and the ladies and we feel again these 15 open heifers are from the heart of the program and right from the top of the pen. The ladies, Michelle and Hillary are doing a great job at home, day by day they are adapting in the running of a cattle operation and I am very proud of them and how they are succeeding. Yes of course we have a lot of phone calls to discuss things or just to vent and throw ideas around, but for the most part they are making everyone up there look down; smile and applaud what they are accomplishing. Carcass Data In order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

ULTRASOUND CARCASS MEASUREMENTS

REA & IMF (Marbling)

Rump Fat

RIB FAT/BACK FAT a measurement of fat cover in inches. It is the main trait that effects percent lean meat yield. RIBEYE AREA (REA) an area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle reported in square inches. RUMP FAT A measurement of fat cover over the rump reported in inches. INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (%IMF) MARBLING a measurement of the amount of fat within the muscle (marbling). USING ULTRASOUND DATA TO SELECT BULLS 1. Fat levels, including marbling, will normally be higher in steers than in similarly fed bulls due to the lack of testosterone. 2. Carcass traits such as ribeye area (REA) and marbling (%IMF) are highly heritable, therefore using sires with high ultrasound scores for these traits will significantly improve carcass quality. 3. Significant premiums are being paid by packers for carcasses that meet high quality grade and yield grade standards. There are extra profits to be made! 4. Less backfat is not always better! Extremely low backfat bulls may sire steers with high yield grades, but they may be slow to finish. Their heifer counterparts may reach puberty later and have more difficulty milking, rebreeding and maintaining a short calving interval. On the other hand, overfat bulls may have reduced fertility. 5. Evaluate your cowherd, decide what kind of progeny you wish to produce and choose bulls with the ultrasound data to match your needs.

VOLUME DISCOUNT WE ARE OFFERING A VOLUME DISCOUNT FOR 5 OR MORE BULLS, BLACK, RED OR WHITE. THE DISCOUNT IS 5% FOR 5 BULLS, 6% FOR 6 BULLS AND SO ON, UP TO 10% FOR 10 OR MORE BULLS.

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN! Windy Willows Farms have been performance testing our herd on the Canadian Angus Performance Program (CAP) since its inception. BW – actual weight of calf taken within 24 hrs of birth. AOD – Age of Dam at time of calving Weaning WT (WW) – the calf weight taken at weaning and adjusted to 205 days of age. Yearling WT (YW) – the weight taken at end of test and adjusted to 365 days of age. What is an EPD? – An EPD is a measure of the average difference in a trait of the progeny of one sire from average of the progeny of other sires. BW EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicates a heavier average birth weight for calves by that bull. WW EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicates a heavier average weaning weight for calves sired by that bull. YW EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicates heavier average yearling weight for calves sired by that bull. MILK EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicated heavier calves from a bull’s daughters due to their milk production. BULL WARRANTY We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day.

TERMS & CONDITIONS TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par. Settlement to be made immediately after the completion of the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerk of the sale before any cattle will be released. All monies are Canadian funds. BIDS: Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder. DISPUTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision of all disputes is final. Welcome to the 18th Annual Git R’ Done Bull & Female Sale W

hen we decided to host our bull sale on the farm 18 years ago, it was a major decision and turning point in our lives. One that we have not regretted. Throughout the years we have had great sale partners and developed a customer base that we are proud of and happy to call friends! We continue to strive for consistency in raising good quality females that require little pampering and yet raise sound functional progeny. The sale offering for 2021 does exactly that. All the calves were weaned on October 2nd and developed on a TMR of pellets, barley silage, rolled barley and chopped hay. The majority of the bulls that we have on offer from the Black yearling and Two-year-old pen are sired by Walkerbrae Warrior 116Z, Bruin Torque 5261, Double C Fortune 575F, Musgrave 316 Stunner and Minburn Active Duty 48B. Our Red Two-year-old offering are sired by calving ease Red Kenray Staunch 61D and performance bull Red Twin Heritage Motivate 30E. We have been raising Red Angus cattle for almost 30 years, but dispersed the Red herd in December 2019, therefore this will be the last offering of Red Angus genetics from Windy Willows. Our 15 open heifers are once again from the top of the replacement pen. They offer genetics from industry leading sires and are sure to be a great addition to your herd. They are definitely worth checking out! The catalog provides you with calving ease and performance information as well as carcass data. We are pleased to have been working with Rod Wendroff, Windy Ridge Ultrasound for 21 years collecting carcass information. Carcass data has become a useful selection tool when evaluating your next herdsire. Our sale will be broadcast online through Livestock Media Plus. We used Baldridge Bronc on our heifers this year and this was the only bull calf. Bronc is a proven calving ease AI sire. His calves are born easily with extra vigor and grow rapidly. We were so impressed with his calving ease and growth that we used him extensively in our 2020 AI program as well. 1H is a twin with a 52 lb birth weight. We would recommend him for heifers especially with his Focal Point dam. This bull held his own in the pen this year with a yearling EPD of +116 and -0.5 BW EPD and all out of a first calf heifer! His great granddam 75W sold to Riley Straub in our Herd Reduction Sale.

Our high seller last year sold to Midland Cattle Co for $24,000. He was a Stunner son and he did a very good job for Ken & Shelly at Maple Creek. 24H offers loads of performance and check out his EPD spread. A calving ease bull with explosive growth numbers and ranked #4 in the bull pen for weaning weight at 753 lbs. His dam, 441B, was one of Hillary’s picks of the heifer calves in the 2014 Masterpiece.

BLACK ANGUS 2 YEAR OLD BULLS Our two-year-old bull pen started with 40 Red and Black bulls. Through extensive culling we arrived at 15 Black Angus and 8 Red Angus two-year-olds on offer. They come from cows we sold in the Herd Reduction Sale in 2019. They were the foundation females that built the Windy Willows program and again, we thank each and every one of you that came that day and supported us. The two-year-old pen was fed just right, not getting pushed very hard. They summered on grass and were brought in and put on feed on September 15th. The have a large pen to get a lot of exercise and to develop them properly to ensure a sound, functional bull that will last a long time. We have many options in the pen and the data provided here for you can let us analyze each bull individually. They are sired by Windy Willows Big Bang 169B, Minburn Active Duty 48B, Early Sunset Game Day 30C, 66 Cedar Wind 299E, MJLC Boomer 19Y and Walkerbrae Warrior 116Z. South West Animal Health Centre and Windy Willows Farms have worked closely with a formal Herd Health Agreement since 2002 to ensure the health of the Windy Willows herd. Thorough monitoring of health status and updating of vaccination/treatment protocols has allowed Windy Willows to maintain a high-health status in their herd. Preventative medicine is an important tool utilized by Windy Willows Farms. The brood cows receive a modified live viral vaccine (Express FP5 – BVDV, IBR, BRSV, Pi3), a clostridial vaccine (Covexin Plus), and a pour-on ivermectin annually in the fall. The cows also receive a scours vaccine pre-calving to ensure that the calves have a healthy start to life. The calves receive an intra-nasal respiratory vaccine (Inforce 3 – BRSV, IBR, PI3) at birth. Before turn-out on grass, they receive a modified live viral/Mannheimia vaccine (Bovishield Gold 5/One Shot – BVDV, IBR, BRSV, PI3, Mannheimia hemolytica) and clostridial/somnus vaccine (Vision 8/Somnus). These two vaccines are repeated in September, prior to weaning, to maximize their immune response and ensure a healthy and productive growing period. The yearlings receive Express 5 and Covexin 8 so that they are fully protected and ready to get to work once they arrive at their new homes.
