Susan Hood in Short Sleeves
The Susan Hood Trophy Race presented by driveHG, known as the Coolest Race, became the Hottest Race on the Lake with just under 80 boats at the startline and shirt sleeve weather for much of the ride. After a near postponement at the start due to a storm cell in the area, all divisions started on time in good air. Then, as predicted by Ron Bianchi our weather expert, and like most LOOR events, the fickle wind conditions tested everyone’s mettle and sanity all the way to the Niagara mark. Conditions stabilized for the run down to Burlington and in the early morning hours the winds really settled in.

Keven Talks Sails
Sail Care for the Sailor
At the sail loft, we are always busy repairing and maintaining sails. Much of the damage we are fixing can be prevented with some simple sail handling tips. Reduce Flogging. Flogging and flapping of sails degrades the structure and integrity of sail cloth. Our in-house cloth testing regime involves impact fluttering sailcloth that simulates aggressive tacks and flapping. In a ten minutes impact flutter session, up to half of the strength can be beaten out the sailcloth. Reduce Sunlight Exposure. UV rays are the worst enemy of sails. With furling headsails, make sure the protective cover is on the outside of the roll!

Speed & Smarts
Take Control of Your Headsail
The mainsail may be the biggest sail on most boats, but the jib provides a relatively large share of the boat’s driving force, for two reasons. First, the jib is not sitting behind a mast, so it sails in clear air with minimal turbulence. Second, the jib operates in a continuous lift that is created when the wind bends to pass on the leeward side of the main. Because of this, the jib is fuller and more powerful, and trimmed farther off centerline, than the mainsail. While the mainsail is critical for the balance of the boat, the jib provides pure horsepower and drive.
