The new track from Laura Kelsey “Beyond the Tide” is a vocal masterclass. It starts with a reflective tune and lyrics that will mean different things to different people, but to me spoke of a desire to change and grow. The tune has an air of 70s soul whilst Laura’s voice soars and dips as she demonstrates her full range. There are elements of the song which are almost whispered and others where she sings with a focused power that is incredible. This is a song that you need to listen to.  Laura Kelsey is just superb.

Laura’s fusion of indie folk-rock quickly became a permanent fixture to our new music radar. Having previously fronted everything from death metal to blues bands, the versatility offered here within her solo venture proves incredibly captivating. My mind fills with thoughts of Evanescence when hearing these tunes – and even if a little more somber in nature and pace to this 90s US rock band, the vocal similarity and delivery style between Laura and Amy Lee are almost uncanny…

Canadian singer-songwriter Laura Kelsey has released a new EP called Hunting Season. Initially the title track is available as a single. It mixes her striking, expressive vocals with delicately played piano, understated slide and picking guitars and rich harmonies. The style is Folk and Americana infused singer-songwriter pop. Production is spacious and dynamic, emphasising the big melodies and Laura’s powerful, rangey voice. Your Stormy Ways comes straight in with vocals against strummed and picked guitars before single piano chords bring a dramatic element and the track begins to build as a slow-burning melancholy Pop-Rock belter.

Die in your dreams introduces a triplet time picked guitar figure with distant keyboard adding a melodic figure before Laura shows off the upper register of her voice. The slightly grainy edge she achieves on certain notes is especially lovely. The song then kicks into a more driving 4/4 time signature and changes tempo several times, always retaining a passionate Americana-infused Pop Rock feel, the triplet time returning amid the fluid series of shifts. It’s an epic track. The final track is Beyond The Tide with its striking guitar riff and expressive vocals. This track was the winner of the New Trax poll on my Saturday evening show on Exile FM back in late February and it is easy to hear why. The melancholy yearning of the vocals and swinging feel of the instrumental track are irresistible. A fine finale to a really strong EP.

Laura Kelsey has a new single out called Hunting Season and you really should track it down! It is a fantastic tune that fits perfectly together with Laura’s vocals which are absolutely fantastic throughout. The sound reminded me so much of Diva era Annie Lennox, with the same mix of brittleness and defiance in the delivery of the words and the same air of theatricality that just draws you inexorably into the song. It’s perhaps my favourite Laura Kelsey track yet in a very strong catalogue.

Amazing song “A Foolish Thing” by the wonderful Laura Kelsey. Right from the start I felt the song whisper to my heart. Amy Winehouse vibes blended with Shania Twain, but blessed with Laura Kelsey’s own touch of delicacy. Definitely a beautiful way with her words and musical composition. There is a deep country happy positive energy in the song. And to top it off, the videography captures the mood perfectly. Her vocals element are nothing quite heard of before. Stunning soulful lady!

Laura Kelsey, half of folk duo Builder & the Banshee recently released a solo single, A Foolish Thing. It is a perfect vehicle for her incredibly powerful voice which swells both emotionally and tonally with perfect control. Her vocal reminds me of Annie Lennox in its ability to paint lyrics in shades of light and dark. The tune provides a solid base to a song that tackles love in all its shades and proves that you can bring a new twist to an old genre. The video is also brilliant! Laura Kelsey is an artist to watch.

‘Wild Mountain Woman’ is a musical dynamo
100 Mile House musical artist Laura Kelsey is a dynamic performer who has had her fingers in all kinds of musical pies. She writes, sings, and performs sexy power blues, country noir ballads and biorhythmic beat music. She has also fronted heavy metal bands, jams regularly at the Hootenanny Cafe, and can usually be found with recording projects and video productions on the go. In fact, between May to June this year, Laura has recorded and released ten original songs, along with videos, which can be found on YouTube. Sound manic? According to Laura there really isn’t a choice in the matter: “I think music decides on you,” she says, rather than the other way around. “Music has always been there — even when you try to ignore it, try to resign yourself to something more ‘stable,’ it always comes back — and then it drives you mad.
