Getting Started with Omni

As OMNI is a system which Lakehead uses in collaboration with other Ontario Council of University Libraries, you have access to much more than just Lakehead resources, when you use OMNI.

Opportunities you have with OMNI include:

• Requesting print books from Lakehead, or any OMNI partner library across Ontario, to be sent to the Lakehead Library desk closest to you for pickup.
• Requesting that a print book from any OMNI partner library, to be sent to the most convenient library for you, at ANY university, for pickup (for example, if you are a Lakehead student who lives in London, Ontario, you could request that a print book be sent to Western for you to pickup there).
• If you can tell from the table of contents, of a print book, that you only need a certain section of that book, you can request that that section be scanned and emailed to you as a .pdf.

On the library's website, click the Advanced Search link. If you are searching specifically for books, change the Material Type drop-down on the right, to Books and eBooks.

Enter keywords and click on Search.  If you know an exact title that you are looking for, you can change Any Field on the left to Title, and enter your exact book title, for a more accurate search.

When your search results are displayed, you can filter your results with the options on the left side.

Available Online = filter your results to show ebooks only

Available in Lakehead Library =  filter your results to show print and ebooks available at Lakehead.

Lakehead Library = displays books by location, e.g. the Chancellor Paterson Library in Thunder Bay, or the Harvie Legacy Library at Orillia University Avenue.

Click on a book that you want to borrow. In the middle of the book record page, view the library location of this book.

You will need to sign into your account to request pickup. Click on the Sign In link, and then enter your Lakehead University credentials (your Lakehead email username and password).

After you hit Request, you will need to select your pickup location. Pickup locations are Chancellor Paterson Library (Thunder Bay);  Education Library (Thunder Bay only); Law Library (Thunder Bay, Law Users only) and Harvie Legacy Library (Orillia - University Avenue). If you wish for a section of a physical book to be scanned and emailed to you, choose the Request Scanned Excerpt option.
