Communiqué - January 2023
For CPF Network Leaders (Branch Board Directors and ED, National Board and Office Staff)
January
And just like that, it’s January and a new year is upon us! The Canadian Parents for French National Board has a vision for a strong, equitable and resilient Network, focused on building shared leadership, supporting engaged membership and volunteers, and delivering relevant, quality programming to parents and youth learning and using French.
The galette des rois (king’s cake) is a very French tradition historically shared at Epiphany celebrating the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem. Nowadays, the season of the galette des rois begins on Twelfth Night and ends on Shrove Tuesday. The French Embassy in Canada welcomed the new year with this sweet tradition on Wednesday January 16 in Ottawa. French Ambassador Michel Miraillet invited a mix of guests  and partners from government, diplomacy, culture, education and business to share in this tradition. CPF Network CEO, Nicole Thibault, attended the reception and was interviewed by the Ottawa Business Journal. CPF appreciates the important and regular exchanges with embassy of France staff throughout the year.

PCH Review of CPF Governance, Communication, and Accountability Processes
In spring 2022, CPF was informed that PCH, as our major funder, would conduct a Review of processes with the CPF National office and a sampling of 3 CPF Branch offices – CPF NB Branch, CPF NWT Branch and CPF MB Branch were selected. The questionnaire was circulated in November and the selected CPF offices were requested to reply and provide supporting documents by mid-January.

While such exercises are time-consuming, they offer an excellent opportunity to remind our organizational leaders of the importance of strong oversight roles, of regular review of risk management practices to continue to ensure a strong, equitable and resilient CPF Network.

The Review results, best practices and potential recommendations will be discussed with all 4 CPF offices directly involved in this exercise, in preparation for the draft review report in late March.

The PCH Final Report will subsequently be shared with the whole CPF Network, in light of informing next steps to clarify expectations and improve our overall processes and practices. The exercise will likely be completed in April / May 2023.

ACTION: The PCH Questionnaire has been shared with all Branch Executive Directors. We encourage each Branch to review the questionnaire as an opportunity to discuss considerations to improve oversight and accountability practices.

Further Network-level discussion will be scheduled in July 2023 upon receipt of the PCH Final Report. Contact CPF Network CEO, Nicole Thibault, nthibault@cpf.ca, with questions or for additional information.

Reminder that the O'Poésie National FSL Poetry Competition has launched. Materials are avaiable on both the CPF QCNU and National websites, is live here on the National site. The deadline is February 9th 2023 and winners will be announced in March.

10th Annual National Canadian Film Day – April 19, 2023
As a reminder, CPF has been reaching out to Branches and Chapters to coordinate both virtual and in-person French Movie Screenings in conjunction with REEL CANADA, who will  cover the cost of buying the rights to the film of choice from their long list of available films.

Their partners Landmark, Cineplex and many independently owned theatres across Canada are willing to host film screenings and REEL will cover the viewing costs. This is an important opportunity to increase CPF Brand visibility in communities across Canada and with these important partner groups.

Action: Please share information to encourage CPF Chapter participation and ensure their coordination with Marin Hawley to be included in the CPF Network Impact Report. Once screenings are booked, we appreciate Branch support of promoting events via social media accounts and in newsletters. Contact Marin Hawley, mhawley@cpf.ca, with questions or for additional information.
