Travel to Canada (international travel)

If you are travelling to Canada and Nova Scotia, take note of travel requirements by the federal and provincial governments. To assist you with following these requirements, contact the International Student Centre well in advance of your travel plans at international.centre@smu.ca.

Recent updates to Canada's COVID-19 travel requirements include:
  • Until January 14, 2022, international students can continue to enter Canada if unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. This includes taking a connecting flight to their final destination that is scheduled to depart within 24 hours of the departure time of their flight to enter Canada.
  • As of January 15, 2022, international students who are 18 years old and older will only be allowed to enter Canada if they are fully vaccinated with an accepted vaccine. Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated international students who are 18 years old and older cannot enter Canada after January 15, 2022.
  • As of January 15, 2022, unvaccinated international students under the age of 18 can enter Canada but must attend a designated learning institution, such as Saint Mary’s University, with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan.
  • Foreign nationals who reside in Canada temporarily, and who entered Canada without being fully vaccinated, can leave the country without being fully vaccinated until February 28, 2022.
Arriving international students who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated are required to quarantine upon arrival. Learn more about travel requirements and quarantine on Saint Mary’s COVID-19 Information website.
