Communiqué - November 2023
For CPF Network Leaders (Branch Board Directors and ED, National Board and Office Staff)
November

"November's sky is chill and drear, November's leaf is red and sear." - Walter Scott

The Canadian Parents for French National Board has a vision for a strong, equitable and resilient Network, focused on building shared leadership, supporting engaged membership and volunteers, and delivering relevant, quality programming to parents and youth learning and using French.

Call for Interest for Openings on CPF National Committees (Bylaws, Nominating and Advocacy Advisory Council)

The CPF National Board has reviewed and confirmed directions and committee mandates for the coming year 2023-2024. There are currently three active CPF National committees: Network Bylaws Committee, Nominating Committee and the new Advocacy Advisory Council whose first meeting will be scheduled in January 2024. While many CPF Branch volunteer or staff leaders have confirmed their interest to continue serving on committees; annually, a call for interest allows individuals to self-identify their interest for this year or for upcoming years as committee member composition changes.

Committee positions are voluntary. We seek to ensure balance in terms of geography, Branch representation, gender, experience, and diversity. Committee work involves a commitment of 3 to 5 web-based 2-hour meetings over the calendar year with hands-on writing, development and review work to be completed between meetings. Details for the terms of reference for each committee are shared with members at their first meeting. CPF volunteer or staff leaders wishing to serve on any of these committees should communicate with Debbie Murphy, Network Coordinator, Branch and Board Support, dmurphy@cpf.ca

Giving Tuesday - November 28, 2023 - Campaign started November 1st

Giving Tuesday, an international day of giving, falls on November 28. The strategy and communications materials were shared with all Branches and offices on November 1st to kick off this year’s campaign. Click here to access the resources.

Each year, CPF Branches and offices access a $1,000 grant via the Mary Joyce Booth Fund. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 to top up the MJB Fund and to reach 75 donors! The success of the campaign this year is focused on three indicators:  a) increased social media engagement; b) increased number of donors and c) increased overall donations total. We are once again offering prizes to Branches and offices for performance results.

ACTION: Engagement from within the organization is key to the success of this campaign. We ask for all Branch staff and volunteer leaders to play an active role communicating with both their personal and professional networks via email and engaging on social media. Make your own proud and personal donation this year: every little helps to reach our goal!

If you have any questions related to this campaign, please contact Members, Chapters and Donor Relations Network Coordinator, Marin Hawley at mhawley@cpf.ca.

This November we are marking two important days and showing our support to each of these milestone dates via social media and by distributing a media release for each of them.

  1. November 20 - National Child Day
National Child Day is celebrated in Canada since 1993 in recognition of our country’s commitment to upholding the rights of children and two historic events: the 1959 signing of the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

This year’s theme is Every Children, Every Right, as every Canadian children should experience all their rights. National Child Day is an excellent opportunity for educators, parents and caregivers to teach children about their rights.

Children First Canada has excellent virtual programming for children and youth of all ages. Although mainly in English, simultaneous translation is being made available. Click here to register and learn more. The CPF National office is hosting a Bilingual Story Time with 11 classes of JK and SK students at St Benedict School in Ottawa. 1. November 23 – La journée internationale des professeurs de français

Established in 2019, the International French Teachers’ Day celebrates French teachers and also those who teach in French in bilingual programs, all around the world. It is observed the fourth Thursday of November. This year’s theme is Fières  et fiers d’enseigner le français.

The media release distributed by CPF National will highlight and recognize the recipients of our FSL Teacher Awards while also thanking every FSL teacher in Canada. As events marking this day become available, CPF will share them on social media.

New Network Project – French Footprints

CPF has officially launched “French Footprints: FSL in the Early Years”, developed in partnership with Families Canada and 123 Petits Pas. Designed for English-speaking child care and early years learning practitioners, this e-training takes a holistic approach to provide practitioners with the confidence, knowledge, and skills to deliver FSL learning opportunities within early years environments.

Registrations are now open for this FREE training. Registered participants will also receive exclusive access to additional resources:

•Bébé Bilingue Resource Kit
•Mme. Amy’s Mid-point and Wrap-up Sessions for ongoing support
•‘Fun in French’ Grant

This is a transformative professional learning journey to champion bilingualism and make a positive, lasting impact in the lives of young children across the country!

ACTION: We appreciate CPF Branch and Chapter support in increasing awareness of this opportunity locally with day care and early years practitioners located in communities across Canada where access to French supports may be more challenging and where this program may have the biggest impact.

Networkwide Projects Led by Branches
This fall we are delighted to see two Branch-led network wide projects.

  1. CPF British Columbia - Yukon: Dites-le en vidéo
A new contest for students across Canada to showcase their French speaking and video making skills!
This hugely successful online competition was first piloted in spring 2020 to offer an alternative event during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many in-person opportunities were cancelled. While most in-person events have now returned, many students told us that they really enjoyed the more casual and accessible virtual format.

CPF BC-YT is inviting students from across Canada to submit videos in French on anything from their favourite hobbies to their take on current events.

Click here for more details. Submissions close on November 19 and winners will be announced December 18. For any further questions please contact Robin Holm at projects@cpf.bc.ca.
  1. CPF Saskatchewan: The Speakers Series

Join CPF Saskatchewan for The Speakers’ Series with a keynote address by Nik Nanos titled The Future of the Non-Profit: Demographic Trends That Will Reshape Society. CPF members and staff, parents and supporters of FSL are invited to attend this virtual presentation on Tuesday, November 28 at 7:00 pm CST via Zoom. This event is free of charge.
