At Home with Children:
Wellness during COVID-19

Whether you are at home caring for children or at home balancing work and child care, here are some tips to help bring structure to your day and help you and your children manage emotions in a positive way.

Table of Contents

Establish Routines

They are important for children’s wellbeing.

Here are some ways to make routines fun:
  • Get creative with simple health practices such as teeth brushing and making handwashing fun by making-up songs/rhymes:
    • Some ideas for teeth humour. E.g. Q: What did the vampire say after the dentist finished checking his teeth? A: ‘Fang’ you very much!
    • Ask your child to help you create a handwashing song that lasts for 20 seconds

  • Being at home means more meals together:
    • Encourage fun, conversational games during meal time
    • Children of any age can be involved in meal planning and preparation; age-specific guidance can be found here
    • Food as art?!  Activity ideas here

  • Set aside time with your child to explore the Ontario government’s Learn at Home resources.

  • Outdoor play, while social distancing, can be fun. E.g. treasure hunts in the yard, walks through the forest/park, fort building, eye-spy.
  • Have quiet time, away from tv and social media. E.g. books, puzzles, games, writing letters/notes to family and friends, journaling about current experiences, and imagination games.

  • Check out Build Your Best Day for more ideas on what to do with your kids. Not all activities are recommended at this time due to social distancing and infection prevention and control guidelines.

Dealing with Stress & Anxiety

Children might feel stressed or anxious about COVID-19.

Here’s how to manage emotions in a positive way:
  • Take the time to calmly talk about COVID-19 with your child. Reassure your child that they are safe. Let them know that it is ok if they feel upset. Share with them how you deal with your own stress so that they can learn how to cope from you.

  • Use credible information to help explain the facts.

  • Remind children that everyday actions can reduce the spread of germs (washing hands);
    • For kid-friendly videos on hygiene and health practices, check out TVOkids!

  • Help children express their feelings by drawing, writing, or other forms of art expression.

  • Kids Help Phone counsellors are available 24/7 at 1-800-668-6868, or text CONNECT to 686868.

  • Consider individual child needs, e.g. children with autism, and provide care that is child-appropriate;
    • Some tips for talking about COVID-19 with children who have autism here.

Don't forget YOU!

Remember to care for yourself.

  • Be informed with credible information

  • Care for yourself- eat well, exercise, sleep, and make time for hobbies (have a library card?  Look here for digital borrowing options)

  • Stay connected with family and friends (phone calls)

  • Help others if you can (children can make crafts for others as gifts)

  • Reduce time spent on social media and the news

  • Explore self-management strategies (Anxiety Canada and Bounce Back offer online support)

  • Have a plan (think about having food and supplies on-hand for 14 days, should your family need to self-isolate)

  • Seek extra help when you need it (telehealth is available in many languages, and local Canadian Mental Health Association offices are also here to help)

You are not alone. We are all in this together!
