Written by Maureen Wideman, Associate Vice President, TLC
At Teaching and Learning, we would like to acknowledge and extend our sincere condolences to those who have experienced loss during the recent catastrophe. Many of our colleagues, students, neighbours and community members are grieving and I am proud of UFV’s timely and empathetic response. I am sure over the next few days and weeks, more stories will emerge about how individuals at UFV pitched in to assist, whether it was housing the displaced, feeding the hungry, rescuing families and animals or digging out basements. We would like to thank our faculty who, yet again, responded quickly in an emergency, to change their courses and assignments to ensure our students were able to achieve the learning they needed to complete the semester. And thank you to our staff who kept offices open and services available so that our students would not be left behind. This flooding cut us off from our communities and networks, but we did our best to stay connected, listening to the stories, sharing what we could, and helping wherever possible. At UFV, we are a community pillar, providing more than just a centre of learning, but a known and reliable source of strength and support. It has been an unprecedented couple of years, but UFV’s resilience has been remarkable. We do it for our students; we do it for our community. It is truly an honour to be a part of this university.
