Only a few days before the unveiling
of Webb's first images!


On July 12, the first full-colour images and spectra obtained using the four instruments of the James Webb Space Telescope will be released. Join astronomers from iREx and people from around the world by tuning in to NASA Live starting at 10:30 a.m. (EDT) to see these images as they are unveiled!

Myriam Prasow-Émond and Anne
Boucher explain their research projects


Last spring, Myriam Prasow-Émond submitted her Master's thesis and Anne Boucher submitted her doctoral thesis, both at the Université de Montréal. They both summarised their projects for us in 400 words: a great opportunity to learn more about the multitude of environments in which exoplanets can be found!
Our educational resource
development project is going well!


Since February 2021, we have been working with several partners and many school staff to create educational resources for schools in Quebec. Learn more about this project, and let us know you're interested if you work in schools yourself!

Nicolas Cowan finalist for the 2021
Relève scientifique du Québec Award


Nicolas Cowan, professor at McGill University and member of iREx, is one of the finalists for the 2021 Relève scientifique du Québec Prize, which aims to highlight commitment and research excellence of a person 40 years of age or less. Congratulations!

Welcome to our 2022 summer interns!

Once again, iREx members are very pleased to welcome undergraduate students from across Canada to work with us this summer. For the first time this year, we are also welcoming an intern in science communication, our Sureau Grant recipient Érika Le Bourdais.

It is with great pleasure that the members of iREx welcome two of our former interns as Master's students. Leslie Moranta is working with Jonathan Gagné at the Université de Montréal and the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium, and Alexandrine L'Heureux is working with René Doyon at UdeM. Welcome!

As part of the Petit Nobel competition organised by the Physics Department at the Université de Montréal, the teaching qualities of four members of our Institute were highlighted: David Lafrenière, Patrick Dufour, Myriam Prasow-Émond, and Thomas Vandal. Congratulations!

On June 20, the Excelle Science award ceremony for Chapeau les filles! was held in Quebec City. Among the 67 laureates were two iREx members: Érika Le Bourdais and Leslie Moranta. Congratulations!

A new planet hunter awakens: the Near InfraRed Planet Searcher (NIRPS) instrument, designed in part by our members, has successfully completed its first operations with the ESO 3.6m Telescope at La Silla in Chile

Upcoming Events

The Popular Astronomy Festival features
the Webb Telescope and three of our members!

The Mont-Mégantic Popular Astronomy Festival brings young and old together for a great celebration of astronomy at the Mont-Mégantic. On the menu: an exhibition visit, a public talk, observing at the Popular Observatory and the Mont-Mégantic Observatory (this is the only time of the year that it is possible for the general public to observe with the 1.6m telescope!).

This year's theme is The Webb Space Telescope, A New Era in Astronomy, and three of our own will take part in the evening presentations (in French):
  • Thursday July 14: Loïc Albert, researcher at iREx and NIRISS Instrument Scientist on Webb
  • Friday July 15: Pierrot Lamontagne, Trottier Intern at iREx
  • Saturday July 16: Nathalie Ouellette, our Coordinator who is also the Outreach Scientist for Webb in Canada.
