Information sharing on behalf of WE LIP member, Windsor-Essex County Health Unit
CORRECTION: News Release: Health Unit Launches “Destination Vaccination” using City Buses to bring Vaccines across the Region
In an effort to increase vaccination rates, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has partnered with Transit Windsor on “Destination Vaccination” a program which makes it convenient for residents of Windsor and Essex County to receive a vaccine close to home.
By partnering with the Transit Windsor, the health unit has secured a city bus to transport nursing staff and vaccines to different areas of the City and County. By focusing on higher priority neighbourhoods, the WECHU hopes that this will be a factor in moving the needle on vaccine uptake to help protect residents and supress the fourth wave of COVID-19 which is impacting the region.
While initially the project is considered to be a pilot, with success, we hope additional routes and more consistent scheduling will follow, according to Health Unit Chief Executive Officer, Nicole Dupuis, “We are excited about the potential of this partnership to deliver vaccines to areas with lower vaccination rates. Depending on uptake, we are optimistic that this can be continued for the long-term.”
Scheduled stops (Wednesday, August 25th, 2021):
- The corner of Wellington Ave and University Ave – Parked along University Ave
- Mic Mac Park (near Prince Road entrance)
On Friday, August 27th, the Bus will be travelling to the county for stops in the Municipality of Leamington. For updates on the buses location, follow the health unit on Facebook and Twitter (@TheWECHU).
The opportunity remains for individuals born in 2009 or earlier looking to receive a first or second dose COVID-19 vaccine, to do so at the Devonshire Mall (former Sears store) mass vaccination site which is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Walk-ins or appointments are available at that site. In addition, select participating pharmacies and healthcare providers are also offering COVID-19 vaccines in Windsor and Essex County and must be contacted directly to schedule an appointment.
