Quebecers 40 and up became eligible on Monday to book appointments for their third vaccine dose against COVID-19.

The Quebec Health Ministry decided last week to accelerate the schedule for third doses, to help curb the rise in cases involving the highly contagious Omicron variant.

On Wednesday, Jan. 12, people 35 and over will be able to book appointments for the shot. Two days later, on Friday, appointments will be opened to those 25 and over and on Monday, Jan. 17, all adult Quebecers will be able to make appointments.

Over the past few days, Quebec has seen a sharp increase in the number of hospitalizations because of COVID-19. The case count stood at 2,436 on Sunday, the highest number since the pandemic began.

The increase in cases has swamped hospitals and forced some institutions to reduce services in other areas, including surgeries, which could place the lives of some patients at risk.

Last week, two projection models produced by the Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux forecast the pressure on hospitals will increase. The projections suggested that COVID-19 cases would account for 3,000 hospitalization within two weeks time, even as 20,000 health care workers are absent from work.
