Job Action

Capilano University-Expression of Interest: Job Action Committee

June 27, 2022

To: All MoveUP Members at CapilanoU

Direct Action gets the goods.

As you have likely all heard, BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) activists have pressured their employer to return to negotiations by organizing the union’s biggest ever strike vote for 33,000 members in the public service. An overwhelming 94.6 per cent of voters said they are prepared to strike for a fair collective agreement.

As the vote wrapped up their employer suddenly invited BCGEU back to bargaining. Negotiations resume today, Monday June 27, in Vancouver.

Their fight is our fight. In anticipation of potential job action from our comrades at the BCGEU against their Employer, we will be striking a Job Action Committee (JAC) at each of the public sector bargaining units for the purpose of engaging and educating members on updates, coordinating job action in the event it is needed (such as another union setting up a picket), and coordinating bargaining campaigns in our own workplaces.

The purpose of the JACs is not just to coordinate in the event of a GEU job action, but to coordinate between MoveUP’s different public sector bargaining units and have some member-based input into our own bargaining campaigns.

Sign up, get involved. This impacts your contract.

Expressions of interest should be forwarded to Christy Slusarenko at cslusarenko@moveuptogether.ca. All bargaining unit committee members are appointed by President Lori Mayhew in accordance with our constitution. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

In solidarity,

Christy Slusarenko, Vice-President
Nathan Beausoleil, Union Representative
