Retirement is on the minds of many as they look to financially plan their future. But how much money is really needed to retire?
This session will walk through research and current Canadian perceptions on retirement, considerations, and misconceptions around financially preparing for retirement and finally get to the answer everyone’s looking for: What’s the magic number; how much money does the average Canadian really need to retire?
You will learn about:
- Why Canadian perceptions on retirement are important, and why recent media coverage on this topic is often subjective and may have altered motives
- The factors that go into determining how much the average Canadian needs to retire; and how those factors have implications and impact on the final dollar amount required to do so
- Three different average Canadian households, their various factors and individualized circumstances and how these contribute to getting to the bottom-line number of how much is actually required to retire
- Common myths and how to dispel misconceptions in the retirement saving and income landscapes

Speakers
Derek W. Dobson CEO & Plan Manager, CAAT Pension Plan CAAT Pension Plan With more than 30 years of experience in the industry, Derek is a seasoned pension leader. Currently the CEO of one of Canada’s most sustainable pension plans, he also serves as Co-Chair of the Canadian Public Pension Leadership Council (CPPLC) and sits as a member of the Pension Policy Council at the C.D. Howe Institute. He is a member of the Talent Ecosystem Committee at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, which aims to facilitate a diverse, competitive, and resilient talent ecosystem in the region. He is also a founding faculty member of the Masters of Trust Management Standards (MTMS) at the International Foundation of Employee Benefits and Pensions (IFEBP).
Derek is a featured speaker at international pension conferences and is a contributing author to Talent Canada, HR Professional, Plans & Trusts, Benefits Canada, and Canadian HR Reporter.
Derek received the 2019 ACPM Industry Award in recognition of his leadership and creativity in addressing the challenges facing the Canadian retirement income system. He continues to advocate for innovative solutions to expand access to sustainable and efficient pension plans for all sectors.
Pamela Steer, FCPA, FCA, CFA President and CEO of CPA Canada As president and CEO of Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada), Pamela leads one of the largest professional accounting bodies in the world, with more than 220,000 members.
Formerly, Pamela was the chief financial and corporate strategy officer at Payments Canada where she oversaw the organization’s finance and corporate planning functions.
Prior to that, she was the chief financial officer and head of finance and employer services with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Here, she led the agency through a major transformation that resulted in improved financial operations and enhanced public trust and credibility for the organization. In 2019, these efforts earned her the honour of Canada’s CFO of the Year™.
Over the course of her career, Pamela has worked in the technology and financial services industries (pensions, insurance), including publicly traded, private and regulated entities in Canada and abroad. Her professional roles are complemented by extensive experience as a board director and chair. She is a founding member of the Canadian Chapter of the Accounting for Sustainability CFO Leadership Network and of the advisory board for the Institute for Sustainable Finance. Also, she currently sits on the University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance advisory council.
Today, Pamela sits on the City of Toronto Investment Board and the boards of Michael Garron Hospital and Quarterhill Inc. (TSX: QTRH). She is a past Chair of the CFA Society Toronto.
