BETTIE MAY MYERS
May 4, 1935 - January 5, 2021

With great sadness we announce the death of our mother, Bettie May Myers. After spending four months in the hospital with a broken ankle, she contracted COVID-19 and died within 10 days.
She will be missed by her children, Lynda Trono (Alan), Carolyn Trono (Jeff) and Bruce Trono (Ian) and her grandchildren, Jesse Reitberger (Ayan), Joel Trono-Doerksen (Kobra), Harrison Reitberger (Sarah) and Morgan Reitberger. Sadly, her three great-grand-children, Adam, Arjeen and Ayoub will never get to know her.
Bettie May was born in Edmonton to a family that was disrupted by mental illness. In spite of some rough early years, Mom was able to create a home and a family life that was safe and comfortable with lots of fun and laughter. She married Arthur Trono in 1957 and moved to BC where she worked as a teacher for a number of years. Our family moved to Joyceville, Ontario in 1969, following Dad's career. There, Mom worked as a teacher in both Joyceville and Kingston. She made it possible for her children to follow many different interests, supporting us with energy and enthusiasm. Mom loved theatre, horseback riding and photography. And more than anything, she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren - right down to their toes.
In 2001, Mom left Kingston to join her daughters in Winnipeg and spend more time with her grandchildren. She made Winnipeg her home, but she always told people she was from Ontario.
To add some pizzazz to Bettie May's story, the adult grandchildren offer their perspective: One thing to know about Bettie May is that she always had it in for the Boomers! She'd quip, "These damn Boomers are rushing me, trying to run my day!" Her adult children, being Boomers, were the Boomers she was complaining about the most! But if anybody else started to agree with her, or get on about Lynda, Carolyn or Bruce, Bettie May would be the first to come to their defence. "These damn boomers!" she would say. Then they, the millennial grandchildren, would agree with her. "I know. Can't believe the Boomers." Then Bettie May would say, "Well Lynda is wonderful, Carolyn is really well organized and Bruce is really bright," seemingly forgetting that she had complained about them for the last 30 minutes.
We are grateful to all of the staff at the Seven Oaks Hospital where Mom was in "Geriat-ric Re-hab." We deeply appreciated your patience and kindness, especially given the fact that your facility is so under-staffed. We have now seen firsthand what nurses and health care aides have to cope with in an under-funded health care system. You are amazing.
A special thank-you to Brian at the Shaftesbury, who seemed to understand our Mom and showed her much kindness.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a family celebration of life post-Covid.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Bettie May was a unique woman. She had strong opinions and a great sense of humour. Her laugh was infectious. I remember the story of her drive to Winnipeg from Kingston. (I think it was before she relocated). I thought it was brave of her but she did it! She was the Matriarch of the family and I extend my deepest sympathy to all the family. - Posted by: Celina Reitberger (Sister in law to Carolyn) on: Jan 11, 2021
