EVENT HISTORY

In the late 50's there were no Zone, Provincial, or Canadian Youth Championships, so juniors in the Toronto Area quite often raced against adults in open dinghy events. In 1959 the junior instructors at Port Credit Yacht Club, under the direction of Fleet Captain Ron Searle, invited a few of the junior programs from neighbouring clubs to come to the mouth of the Credit River for a regatta. The event was such a success that it has been held every year since.

TODAY

The regatta has grown from a local event to include junior sailors from all over Canada, and the south shore of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Although there is competition among the junior clubs, coaching is actively encouraged for the last 1/3 of the fleet. The regatta has also become a training event for Race Officers; having as many as 50 or more boats on a starting line is a challenge for wannabe RO’s.

THE STEERERS' TROPHY

In 1968 a trophy was created from a wooden Nutshell rudder, hence the name Steerers’, and presented to the best Junior Club in the regatta. The Trophy is awarded using a formula which takes into consideration not only the winners but also the participation in all classes.

In 2023, 22 clubs competed to win the coveted trophy.

The 2023 Steerers' Trophy winner is Oakville Yacht Squadron!  Congratulations!

Steerers’ 2023 Goes International!

Sailors came from as far as Hong Kong, Mexico, West Vancouver, Nova Scotia, Frenchman’s Bay, Lake of Bays, Nepean, Sarnia, Kingston, and Stony Lake, just to name a few who ‘travelled the distance’ even before they got on the water at the 64th PCYC Steerers’ Invitational, sponsored by driveHG.ca. PCYC proudly hosted 321 sailors, 59 coaches, and 230 boats from 22 sailing clubs, in what was the best turnout in recent years.

The event included four different race courses and four top rated Race Committees set for Optimist Green sailors (many for whom this was their first regatta sailed) and separately for Optimist Championship White, Blue, and Red (age-determined, all under age 16) for a total of 87 Optis; 91 C420 White Sail and Spinnaker double-handed teams; and 43 ILCA 4.7 and ILCA 6 sailors.

Wind and weather was excellent over the two-day event, with 5 races sailed over the two days for Optimists and C420s, and 7 races for ILCA 4.6 and 6. On-water coaching and jury boats including Certified National Sailing Judges were on all courses, offering a tremendous growth experience for all our young sailors. Enthusiastic PCYC member-volunteers packed awesome swag and lunches, checked both sailors and coaches safely out-and-in off the water, launched and hauled out 230 dinghies. Congratulations to all sailors for a spectacular regatta, and thank you for joining us at Port Credit Yacht Club!

Congratulations to the Oakville Yacht Squadron, who were the conquering winners of the Steerers’ Invitational trophy in 2023!

Top Championship Optimist Flag went to Sterling Ott, of Port Credit Yacht Club.

The John Weakley Memorial Trophy for most improved Optimist sailor was awarded to Gabby Coté, Royal Hamilton Yacht Club.

The Tim Noble Award for Sportsmanship was awarded to three different entries: Isla Sitter, Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club; Etienne Rimoux, Etobicoke Yacht Club; Elliot Hoetmer and Wesley Kotto Ciccone, Barrie Yacht Club.
