ABOUT THE PROJECT

From One Place to Another: Wandering Art takes the playful form of a "gallery-on-wheels" to present new work by local artists in Katarokwi-Kingston on a city-wide tour. The tour of selected artist projects and supplementary programming will take place throughout July–August 2022 with a digital publication launch in September 2022.

The Wandering Art Station (WAS) is a mobile structure conceived as a platform for artists to engage publics and public spaces in Katarokwi-Kingston, beyond gallery walls. The WAS aims to reinvigorate conversations around site-specificity, to consider how siting art in public might retain a critical edge and ask questions of the social, political, spatial processes that organize urban space and participation in civic life.

Union Gallery will provide the successful applicants with a paid opportunity to research, produce, and present new work via the Wandering Art Station. Each selected proposal will also be supplemented by a public program (i.e. workshop, artist talk, performance, etc.). Artists are invited to consider the WAS as both a station for site research and a platform for public artwork. Ideal projects will be committed to thinking about site-specificity, territory and environment, audience, community and publics.

WANDERING ART STATION

The Wandering Art Station (WAS) is an experimental vessel, vehicle and platform. Designed by Jennifer Demitor of Fabricae Architecture and Art Ltd., the WAS can be configured into multiple variations—compressed, extended or with its canopy and shelves open. The WAS has open storage inside its cart extension and a retractable extension cord reel. Download the WAS dimensions package.

The WAS is available to view in-person, currently positioned outside of Union Gallery’s main doors in Stauffer Library’s Loggia.

BUDGET

Successful applicants will receive $680 CAD artist fee, $400 CAD production budget, and $350 CAD to present a supplementary public program (i.e. workshop, artist talk, performance, etc.).

STAFF + ARTISTIC SUPPORT

Each successful applicant will receive support from Union Gallery staff and work closely with Curator + Project Coordinator, GHY Cheung. Each successful applicant will also be paired with a Queen's University Student Artist Assistant to support their work and foster diverse creative networks. While staff and assistants will support the full and successful realization of each artist project, proposals must be structured in a way that the applicant is able to lead their own research, creation, material sourcing, and budget management.

GHY CHEUNG, CURATOR + PROJECT COORDINATOR

From One Place to Another: Wandering Art is curated and coordinated by GHY Cheung. GHY Cheung is a Hong Kong-born writer and artist. At present he is working on a project that investigates queer space in Hong Kong and the spatial practices that produce this vital undercurrent in the cityscape. He is one-half of the artist duo Tear Jerkers, with Michelle Bunton, and one-quarter of Small Potatoes Press, with Carina Magazzeni, Ella Gonzales and Michelle Bunton. His research spans public art and interventionist practices; spatial theory; queer and feminist theories; and utopian studies. Across his inquiries, he centres queer kinships as method, archive and sustenance.

JENNIFER DEMITOR, ARTIST + ARCHITECT

The Wandering Art Station was designed and constructed by Jennifer Demitor of Fabricae Architecture. Jennifer Demitor is a visual artist and registered architect residing in Kingston, ON. She has lived in both the west and east coasts of Canada, completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at UBC-Okanagan and her Master of Architecture at Dalhousie University in Halifax. After working primarily as an architect, she realized her artistic and architectural practices were intertwined and could inform and enhance each other. Her work uses the built environment to adjust our perceptions of the built and natural worlds and connect us to our surroundings. These architectural installations are often built in situ and either engage with or evolve out of their locales often exploring the lines between architecture and art. She is the owner and principal architect of Fabricae Architecture and Art Ltd. where she explores how to instill more art in the architecture around us.

THANKS + ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Our vision for the Wandering Art Station was collectively shaped by the imagination of our many student volunteers and staff, and fully realized by local artist and architect, Jennifer Demitor. From One Place to Another: Wandering Art is generously supported by the City of Kingston Arts Fund (CKAF): Adapt Grant through the Kingston Arts Council.
