MAR. 17, 2021 updated: Queen's takes additional steps to help prevent spread of COVID-19

Over the past week, the Kingston community has seen a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 cases linked to variants of concern (VOC). To help address this risk, today the University posted the announcement that Queen's is taking the proactive step of closing the Athletics and Recreation Centre, effective March 18th, as a precaution. This closure comes on the advice of KFL&A Public Health and the university's own public health advisers and will be in effect until further notice.

The closure affects all in-person programming in the ARC. The ARC will continue to provide virtual fitness programs and on on-demand workouts given the importance of physical health and wellbeing.

All members of the Queen's community continue to be asked to self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms, and get tested right away if they develop any signs of illness. In addition, the University is strongly encouraging students who have been in close contact with anyone outside their household without wearing a face covering or physical distancing, to get tested during the next two weeks, even if they are not experiencing symptoms.

The KHSC satellite COVID-19 assessment centre located in Mitchell Hall, is regularly open to test students from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm, and will be running extended hours until 8:30 pm, now through March 19, inclusive. Appointments can be booked by calling Student Wellness Services at 613-533-2506. Evening appointments (4 pm - 8:30 pm) can also be booked online.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we re-open the ARC swimming pool. We have been pleased to welcome so many of you back!

Starting November 2, the ARC pool change rooms will be available with the following conditions, as approved by KFL&A Public Health:
  • Swimmers must continue to arrive to swim with their bathing suit on under outerwear and use the deck pod to get ready to swim, and a deck tote for storage while swimming.
  • At the end of the swim activity period, those wishing to change out of their bathing suit may line up on the deck behind the designated signs for the women's, men's and universal change rooms.
  • Each pool change room has very limited capacity.  Change areas in each room are clearly marked and only one swimmer is permitted in each designated area.

SEPT. 3, 2020 updated: ARC Re-opening

Queen's Athletics & Recreation is excited to announce a phased re-opening of the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), beginning September 8, 2020.

"Our goal is to see the majority of programs and spaces in operation by October 1st.  Our facilities have been reconfigured and our programs modified to align with provincial and public health requirements," says Leslie Dal Cin, Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation. "Our A&R team has been busy over the past few months getting our facilities and programs ready and we are looking forward to welcoming back our students and Queen's and Kingston community members in a way that allows them to use our exceptional facilities safely."

To ensure physical distancing and compliance with current provincial and public health requirements, all venues have reduced capacity, fitness equipment has been re-configured, some areas are closed, and some non-traditional spaces are being used for different activities so we can serve as many members of our community as possible, safely.  New safety measures and protocols must be followed by all facility users.  A new on-line user reservation system is now in place to allow facility users to sign up for work-out times, spaces and equipment.
