We are thrilled to be coming to Nova Scotia for our 2022 Worlds. It is a place that has sailing in its history and its future, and we can't wait to be a part of that.

About the Boats

The 2022 World Championships will consist of three different Olympic sailing classes: the 49er, 49er FX, and Nacra 17. The three boats are the fastest of the Olympic classes, with speeds of up to 30 knots (55 kmh).

49er Skiff Sailboat

49er

The 49er is the two-person skiff Olympic class boat open to any gender. 49er’s are sailed by a team of two: a skipper who steers and makes decisions, and a crew who works with the sails and speed of the boat.

49erFX Skiff Sailboat

49erFX

The 49erFX is the women's two-person skiff Olympic class boat. 49erFX's have the same hull design, length, and width as the 49er’s, but feature other differences designed for a lighter crew.

Nacra 17 Skiff

Nacra 17

The Nacra 17 is a performance catamaran specifically designed in 2011 to meet the requirements for a mixed gender crew Olympic boat. Nacra 17’s are sailed by a crew of two and are around 17 feet long.

Georgia & Antonia Lewin-LaFrance

Local Athletes

The Lewin-LaFrance sisters, Antonia and Georgia, started their career in sailing in Chester, Nova Scotia. The sisters started out by participating in the Chester Yacht Club, and later the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Both sisters continued to grow their skills for a few years, with Georgia sailing the opti on the Canadian Optimist Atlantic Sailing Team and Antonia sailing the laser radial. After the sisters paired up for the Canadian and American National Championships and won both events, they decided to join forces again in the Olympic class 49erFX. The pair continues to race together on their path towards the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
