Saskatchewan Polytechnic scores with new sport management specialty

Goal of new Business diploma specialty is to prepare graduates for successful and diverse careers in sport

December 8, 2022 – Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s School of Business is excited to launch its new sport management specialty for the Business diploma program. Graduates with the new specialty will be prepared for successful and diverse careers in sport.

Sport management combines the love of sport with business management fundamentals, making it a meaningful and rewarding career path. Through work-integrated learning opportunities, the sport management curriculum focuses on providing students with skills and experiences to generate revenue and manage sport organizations.

“Sport brings people together from different backgrounds, cultures and generations, and plays an important part in community building,” says Stephen Kirzinger, program head for the new specialty. “For sport organizations of all sizes, generating revenue is critical to their success and is also a significant challenge. This program and its graduates will help these organizations generate revenue that will support their missions and goals and ultimately grow the sport industry in Saskatchewan.”

Designed with industry—for industry, the sport management curriculum was validated by 19 sport industry professionals from 14 different sport organizations from a variety of sport sectors. “Working with industry to build curriculum ensures students are prepared for success in the workplace and ready to meet the diverse needs of sport organization employers,” says Kirzinger. “During an event with industry partners earlier this year to review curriculum the energy throughout the discussion was evident. Many sport organizations are excited to grow Saskatchewan’s labour force within sport management.”

“Students will come away from this program with a lot of opportunities and their knowledge base is going to be expanded,” says Darren Dupont, founder and CEO of Dupont Media. “There are so many different areas in sport. It’s more than being a coach or GM or being in the business operations side. Sask Polytech’s new sport management specialty will provide students a better understanding of the sport industry; that’s why students should enroll.”

With career opportunities in Saskatchewan and around the world, ranging from professional and grassroots sport, national, provincial, local, and multisport organizations to sport performance, sport agencies and service providers, sport organization partners, college and university sport, sport media, esports and entrepreneurship, the possibilities are endless.

Business diploma students starting January 2023 are eligible to apply for the sport management specialty in fall 2023. Business diploma students who have completed year one or completed the Business certificate program are also eligible to start the sport management specialty in fall 2023.
