Province at the ready for 2024 wildfire season
Alberta is experiencing warmer than normal temperatures and below average precipitation in many areas of the province, leading to heightened wildfire risk. To better direct resources to new and existing wildfires, Alberta has declared an early start to the 2024 wildfire season, 10 days earlier than usual.
Declaring the beginning of the 2024 wildfire season provides additional measures to Alberta Wildfire, including the use of the fire ban and restriction system to help reduce human-caused wildfires in response to hazardous conditions. Furthermore, any Albertan who has burning planned in the Forest Protection Area will require a permit.

Canadian farm sector income expected to reach new records
Agriculture Canada has completed its farm income forecast for 2023 and 2024, with results showing that overall Canadian farm income is expected to have reached a new record in 2023.
For 2023, Net Cash Income (NCI), the main metric Agriculture Canada uses to measure farm income, is forecast to have increased 13% to a new record of $24.8 billion. While growth in both expenses and receipts is forecast to have been much more modest than what was seen in 2021 and 2022, growth in receipts for 2023 is still forecast to have outpaced that of expenses, resulting in a new record for NCI.

China's economic struggle impacts global pork markets
China is the world’s largest producer, consumer and importer of pork. Fourth quarter of 2023 showed that China increased slaughter to cut losses amid an oversupply of pigs and an outbreak of African swine fever.
Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government says there is an imbalance between supply and demand for pork in China caused by huge losses and an accelerating move away from pork as the preferred meat.

Apply for a spring cash advance
Farmers from across Western Canada can now apply for a 2024 spring cash advance through Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA). Many farmers use a spring advance to cover the working capital requirements of putting in the new crop.
This year's program offers farmers a combination of no- and low‑interest financing for their farm business. Applicants are eligible for up to $1 million in financing, with the interest‑free component at $100,000 and the remaining at CCGA's interest‑bearing rate of prime less 0.25%.
