End For-Profit Seniors' Care in B.C.

Share your story

In Canada, four in five COVID-19 deaths are connected to long-term care facilities and make up the majority of deaths in B.C. This tragedy lays at the feet of for-profit companies because by under-employing workers at low wages in order to maximize profit, care workers were forced to cobble together multiple jobs at multiple locations in order to make ends meet. This eroded quality of care for seniors and as we now know, created the ideal conditions for the virus to spread from facility to facility.

Our government needs to hear from you. Your stories. Your experiences. Were you working in seniors’ care in the early 2000s when the Liberal government stripped workers of their rights and opened the door to privatization? Have you struggled as the sector fell into crisis over the last two decades? Are you new to the field and want to see improved care and better working conditions?

Whether your experience is in for-profit, non-profit or government – the sector as a whole is broken. Through your stories, we can help government find a public solution that includes fair compensation and decent conditions for workers; increased transparency and accountability for operators; and safe, dignified care for seniors and Elders.
